The large amount of rain we have received has had its impact. Here, about six feet of our crossing across Hatfield Creek was washed away exposing a 6" irrigation water line (white pipe in photo). Sullivan was fearless, though, and didn't let the swift moving flow deter him from forging ahead to the other side.

These sticks are Metz Winery's future vineyard! Canes from dormant grape vines are being collected from local vineyards and wineries to cut into cuttings. It will take these cuttings three years to bear good fruit. Until that time, all fruit will be nipped off as soon as possible to allow for concentration of energy and nutrients into leaf and shoot growth. It takes time to make good wine! 😉

I've posted before about the rain we have been receiving. When I left at 6 a.m. yesterday morning to drive to central California, these 5 gallon buckets were empty. When I returned, they had 3" of water from rain all day. Not a big deal, you say? Well, you may be right. But, that is just one day out of many we have had like this. I have taller 6 gallon buckets which I have emptied at least once and they are full again. I estimate we have received more than 30" of rain since the rainy season started last Fall. Our annual rainfall is 14" - 15"!

We have received a decent amount of rain! This cut-off 5 gallon water jug filled to 8 inches over the past 4 to 5 weeks. (The brown color is from old oak tree leaves.)

Sometimes things as simple as laying pipe in a trench can become quite complicated. This was one of those times. A 22 foot long section of trench got dug at an angle and curvy. Had to spend half a day scraping several inches from the bottom of this 2 foot trench in order to position my pipe so it would mate with previously laid pipe. Glad that is over and turned out well. Should be smooth sailing from hereon out with straighter sections cut straight down.

In this job of building a wine tasting venue, one does all sorts of different things. Here, I have had to become a surveyor. Walkways and concrete pads as well as roads and parking all need to have proper slopes. Not too much. Not too little. Sounds a little like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Thank you, Everyone, for all of the FB Likes. Progress constructing the wine tasting venue is slow going doing it alone. But, progress is being made. A post will be made soon to update the progress. Take care and stay safe.

Killing weeds without herbicides. Don't want to use herbicides to kill weeds as we try to stay as organic as possible. But, we ran out of plastic! If you have plastic or tarps (prefer black/colored/not clear) or cement blocks like shown in these photos to hold the plastic down, please don't throw them away - we could use them! As long as they don't have too many or too large holes, we can use them. This process takes a couple of months to work. We would like to cover more of the ground. Please contact us, if you have any to donate.

For those following our progress here, we did complete installation of our water system! We posted below some photos and short videos of that work. So, progress is being made.

Another week, another post. A little progress. Still problems with trenching machine. But, now, they have been resolved! :) Can't wait to invite you over!

It has been awhile since we last posted progress on our wine tasting venue here at Metz Winery in Ramona. Here is a short video doing just that. Had problems with our trenching machine which set us back a few weeks.
