Some final shots of the bare stainless before heading to paint for a duplex system of epoxy and polyurethane. After that, Destiny paints a very special, custom design onto the letters “I AM.” I prefer to look at metalwork in this state, with all the “work patina” intact. Right now you can see all of the evidence of our labor. After paint, all of that work will be hidden as the intended illusion takes over.

Fabrication yoga by Flora. Stick around for a very silly pose at 1:01!

PART 2 LETTER ASSEMBLY (Check out Part 1 for some fun troubleshooting moments.)

In this video, we harnessed wind, water, fire, and heart to get Destiny’s sculpture to look like balloons had gently floated down and bumped into one another. You’ll see us torching multiple locations at once, managing heat carefully in order to squash letters into one another by double sledging. I was so happy with our team work, particularly during this part of the project!

PART 1 LETTER ASSEMBLY
In this video you’ll see us using a balloon letter model as a reference to place, secure, weld, and modify our 2’ tall stainless steel “balloons” into a 6’ tall sculpture. This process took a lot of finicky placement, comparison, discussion, troubleshooting, and disassembly before we got it to a place I was happy with. If we’re doing a project for you and you’re ever wondering if I care enough about the aesthetics, just know that I’m 100% pickier than you are (sorry Flora and Michelle lol).

Here you’ll see our process for hot-inflating the lower portion of the bench seat for our Codman Square project. As I mention in the video, stainless steel reacts to heat by expanding and contracting at an astounding rate.

Here’s a bird’s eye view of our stainless steel bubble letter “puffing” process. You’ll see that I’m wearing a silver suit. This keeps me (relatively) comfortable standing in front of the radiant heat from each letter as it exits the forge. The puffing happens inside of the forge to maximize inflation–the longer it stays hot, the more the letter will expand. You’ll see that some of the letters are already three-dimensional when they enter the forge. This is because as stainless steel cools down, it shrinks considerably. Because of this, we decided that the letters could use a second “puff.”

At this point in the process, we're testing full-size letters (they will each be 2 feet tall). We're noting things like where the fill port is placed vs. how different parts of the letters fill. I cut out a part of the video where we're swearing because the lower point in this M only fills 40% before tearing occurs at the weak points. We figured it out (hey, gotta keep some things a secret), and now we have random huge letter Ms that will float around the shop till the end of time.

I thought I'd show you the (nearly) end product, so that you have an idea of where we're headed while I show off process shots and videos. This was last summer, just before we delivered the sculpture for blasting and painting.

COME CELEBRATE WITH US!

This June marks 10 years since I moved from East Boston to Providence with a suitcase welder, used abrasive chop saw and corded hand drill. I built my first small job on the floor and used the money to buy a welding table. That trend continued over the years, and now 10 years later we have a full welding and forging shop with all the toys we could want. I'm grateful for all the hard work of employees over the years, and the support of my family, friends and partner as I slogged through the 100 hour weeks it took to get us here. I've never had a party in our space before, and I want to invite you all to come see our shop, take a look at some cool projects including the inflated stainless steel bench we've been working on, and check out some of my artwork. I hope to see you there!

Is anyone going to the MASSBUYS EXPO? If so, see you there! We're at booth 1131.
