Just a little history for ya on this lovely Monday!

If you have ever wondered about the iconic Johnny’s sign, here is a fun bit of Lawrence history.

The arrow that hangs over Johnny’s in North Lawrence originally appeared in a 1950 parade photo on Massachusetts Street in front of a different business called Johnny’s Café at 1031 Mass. The café was owned by John Emick’s family in the 1940s and 50s. When Johnny Wilson opened Johnny’s Tavern in North Lawrence in 1953, he tracked down that same arrow sign and put it to work again.

Locals who remember those days describe John Emick as a great guy who owned multiple downtown buildings and supplied pool tables and pinball machines across Lawrence. He may not have been the “godfather” of Lawrence, but he certainly had the vibe.

So the sign that everyone knows is actually recycled, with roots on Mass Street and a second life in North Lawrence. It has been pointing the way ever since.
