Newk has left the planet. RIP Mr Rollins.

Alfred Lion was born on this day April 21, 1908 in Berlin. A jazz concert he attended as a teenager sparked a lifelong passion for the music that would eventually lead him to NYC where he founded Blue Note Records in 1939.

"Alfred & Frank were more like jazz musicians than record executives," Bobby Hutcherson once said. "They loved to hang out and have a great time. They loved the music and had a real feel for it."

Thanks to Ron Carter. Happy Birthday to Charles Mingus.

Today would have been Charles Mingus's 103rd birthday. I saw him play “I Can’t Get Started” at the old Five Spot in New York in the 60s… He played it so differently from how I’d heard others do it. It really inspired me to do my own solo take on the song.

Happy birthday, Mr. Mingus.

American pianist Richard Alan Beirach (Richie Beirach), one of the prominent creative voices on keyboard in the post-60s jazz landscape whose unique compositional sensibilities are to the fore on several notable ECM sessions, has died aged 78 in a hospital in Worms, close to his adopted home city of Heßheim in Germany.

Today Beirach can still be heard and seen spreading wisdom on piano-theoretical concepts as well as sharing his experiences and thoughts about some of his most significant influences in videos online. In one of them, discussing Bill Evans, he comes to the conclusion that “very often the things that we consider to be new are not new. They’re just new combinations or reanimations and reimaginations of things that have already been done, put together in a different way.” Seldom were they put together as thoughtfully as by Richie.
