Portland Monthly's Bright Lights

Portland Monthly's Bright Lights Bright Lights is a monthly onstage talk show on issues and with people shaping the region, produced by Portland Monthly magazine.

The series is hosted by longtime local journalist and Portland Monthly's editor in chief, Randy Gragg. Bright Lights has brought many of Portland's most dynamic leaders to stage to not only talk about issues facing the city but to reveal a little of themselves. The relaxed setting of Portland's leading jazz bar allows the audience to grab a drink and a bite and learn more about the city and the pe

ople shaping it. The question-and-answer format led by one of Portland's leading journalists helps get past the sound bytes and packaged messages. The audience is welcome to jump in, too. Since commencing in February, 2008, Bright Lights has hosted guests as Neal Keny Guyer, CEO of Mercy Corps; Congressman Earl Blumenauer; then-Metro president David Bragdon; Erin Flynn, the city's director of economic development; leading structural engineer Ann Monier; advertising guru Dan Wieden; and many others. Bright Lights has also hosted guests who are shaping cities elsewhere: Tim Stonor of the groundbreaking London planning firm, Space Syntax; renowned New York exhibition designer Ed Schlossberg; and legendary Houston artist/activist Rick Lowe. As well, Bright Lights has hosted political debates for the offices of mayor and Metro president and brought leaders together to tackle issues such as the Columbia River Crossing and the Rose Quarter redevelopment.

A conversation with Design Museum Boston
Can a Boston “museum” concept gain traction in Portland?

In 2009, a pair of 20-something designers had an idea: a design museum for Boston. But rather than reach for a building, the founders and future codirectors of Design Museum Boston, Sam Aquillano and Derek Cascio, threw a pizza party—and spread their belief in design throughout the city.

Join us Monday at Jimmy Mak's Mak's to find out more as PM's editor, Randy Gragg, talks with the founders and future codirectors of Design Museum Boston. Doors at 530pm; discussion begins at 6pm.

PNCA and the Rebirth of the North Park Blocks
For decades, Portland’s verdant Park Blocks have ended their northern reach at a fenced parking lot with all the life of a dead-end alley. But come September, a transformation will begin as one of the city’s most august and imposing edifices—the 511 Building—becomes home base to its fastest-growing creative institution: the Pacific Northwest College of Art.

Join us tonight at Jimmy Mak's to find out more as PM's editor, Randy Gragg, talks with Tom Manley and
Brad Cloepfil. Doors at 530pm; discussion begins at 6pm.

Through an unlikely nexus of meticulous craft, go-yer-own-way frontier spirit, and friendly urbanism, the Rose City is blooming into a kind anti-Silicon Valley. But is it another ‘90s-style flowering destined to wilt? Or could Portland’s smaller-scale, artisanal approach build a more durable economic cluster? Join us tonight at Jimmy Mak's to find out more as PM's editor, Randy Gragg, talks with Rick Turoczy, GM of PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment). Doors at 530pm; discussion begins at 6pm.
