🤠 Meet the Spirit: Sheriff James Preston Fulkerson
Portrayed by Bobbie Vickery

💬 “In a time before lawmen had badges or jails, one man stood for order in the Wild West.”

Before Port Lavaca had a courthouse, it had Sheriff James Preston Fulkerson — a man who brought justice to a frontier town finding its footing.
In 1852, he gave his life while keeping the peace, becoming the county’s first lawman to die in the line of duty. His bravery was remembered in newspapers from Texas to Boston — a true testament to how deeply his loss was felt.
His story reminds us that every community’s peace was once won by those willing to stand between danger and the people they swore to protect. Join us to hear story and more. Tickets also available at the gate.

⚖️ Meet the Spirit: Judge Howard Gallemore Hartzog, Sr.
Portrayed by Ronny Best

💬 “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.” — Mother Teresa

Few men embodied those words like Judge Howard G. Hartzog — a true “stone caster” whose ripples still shape Calhoun County today.

Visionary, determined, and deeply devoted to his community, Judge Hartzog’s influence can still be seen in the roads we travel, the seawalls that protect us, and the county he loved.

🌬️ Meet the Spirit: Miss Grace Bierman
Portrayed by Katie Moody

💬 “The pavilion has disappeared…”
Born in 1895, Grace Bierman grew up in the music and sunshine of Port Lavaca’s early days — a pianist, teacher, and beloved young woman whose life was as graceful as her name.
On September 14, 1919, as a powerful hurricane tore across the Texas coast, Grace watched through her front door as the “New Pavilion” — her favorite seaside dance hall — collapsed into the bay. With a final whisper, “The pavilion has disappeared,” her gentle heart gave out.
Her story is one of beauty, sisterhood, and loss — and of a community that rebuilt, stronger, with a seawall that still stands as a tribute to those swept away by the storm.

💬 “Though silent, he speaks.”

In the Port Lavaca Cemetery stands a tree-shaped tombstone honoring Edward Edgar — Civil War soldier, newspaperman, tax collector, and the county’s first sheriff to serve in its “new” jail of 1896. A man devoted to community and service, his story still echoes through time.
