On this day in 1969, Grateful Dead rolled into Robertson Gym at UCSB for the now-infamous “Memorial Day Ball” alongside Lee Michaels & The Youngbloods ⚡️ During what should’ve been another legendary show, nearly everything that could go wrong did: blown amps, failing microphones, unstable power, and constant sound issues ended the night prematurely.
Adding to the lore, Rolling Stone writer Michael Lydon was traveling with the band during this stretch of the tour, documenting the beautiful chaos of life on the road with the Dead in 1969. His firsthand accounts helped cement the show’s reputation as one of those messy, unpredictable nights that perfectly captured the raw, unfiltered reality of the Grateful Dead experience. Phil Lesh reportedly apologized to fans afterward, promising the band would make it up to them. And nearly 60 years later, the wild poster art, conflicting memories, missing recordings, and sheer mythology surrounding the show continue to live on as part of the long strange trip.
