In 1998, the brutal murder of a young gay man living in Laramie, Wyoming, shocked the world and sparked the hate crime debate. The 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten, and tied to a fence and left to die in the middle of the prairie. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay. Playwright Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project made six trips to Laramie over the course of a year and a half and conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town. This play, written in 2000, is the result of that work.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT runs October 7 at 11:00am, October 7-10 at 7:30pm, and October 11 at 2:00pm in the Center for the Arts Theatre. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $5 for students/under 18. On Friday September 18th at 6 pm in the CFA theatre, we will be having our first ever Staging and Sips!! This event will consist of speed dating with different areas of theatre, alongside mocktails prepared by your E-Board! The Theatre program is going back to London in January 2027 for our Short Term Faculty Led Education Abroad program!! The program is open to sophomore, junior, and senior students of all majors and fulfills both the fine arts and global studies general education requirements. The deadline for applications is OCTOBER 1! The trip is planned for January 5-9 (on campus) January 11-18 (London). There are two courses to choose from: English Period Styles for the Theatre and British Drama. Students will spend a week on campus doing class work before both classes combine to travel to London on January 10. We then spend a week in London!

Some highlights of the trip include: The British Museum, The Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, tours of the Globe and National theatres, to name a few! We will also be seeing 5 theatre productions as a group. Space is limited so apply today! You can find more information and apply for the program at the link below! DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 1!

AUDITIONS!!! Auditions for our fall plays, THE LARAMIE PROJECT and THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, will be September 8 and 9 from 6:30-8:30pm in the Center for the Arts Theatre. Those interested should sign up for an audition time on the red board outside of Doudna 180. Monologues are provided for anyone who needs one (they do not need to be memorized). Bring a friend! New students are encouraged to audition!

"The Laramie Project" by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project tells the true story of gay college student, Matthew Shepard, who was murdered in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. The play draws on hundreds of interviews conducted by the theatre company with inhabitants of the town, company members' own journal entries, and published news reports. Eight actors portray more than sixty characters. The Laramie Project runs Oct. 7-11.

"The Thanksgiving Play" is a sharp satirical comedy by Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse that follows four teaching artists struggling to create a culturally sensitive elementary school Thanksgiving pageant. The Thanksgiving Play runs November 18-22.
