Based on my passion for good wine and good friends, I recently began to run my own business as an Independent Wine Consultant with WineShop At Home. The concept is easy and fun: someone hosts a Wine Tasting event, which I facilitate, in their home for friends and family. Everyone has a chance to taste and learn about some
incredible wines, as well the best foods to match to a specific wine. These tastings are relaxed, informative, delicious and social. It’s very simple: we decide on a date (I can provide you with open dates if you’re interested), and order a wine sampler. We have several to choose from, and the selection changes every month for variety! The sampler runs $29.95 (plus shipping) for 6 premium bottles of wine. Once shipping is added, it comes out to about $52. In comparison, many wineries in Napa charge $15-20 for each tasting room visit, so this is much more reasonable. I will provide you with an electronic invitation to send out, and a few days before the party, I will let you know what kind of foods you will need to provide to pair with the wines. Usually, we serve 3-4 cheeses, grapes, crackers, and a little chocolate. Different foods bring out the flavor profiles in the wine, changing and enhancing the taste. The sampler provides for a maximum of 16 guests, with everyone receiving a 1-ounce pour from each bottle. Each person will have consumed one and a half glasses by the end. The tasting usually runs about 1 1/2 - 2 hours, and at the end, people can and will hopefully order wines if they wish. Obviously, my goal is to sell wine, about 15-20 bottles per tasting. Although this is a business, it is a low-pressure, enjoyable “try before you buy” experience. I have gone to a few of these as a guest, and have loved every moment of them. Clearly the invitees don’t have to be all women…anyone over 21 who enjoys drinking wine is welcome! It is a great way to bring the Wine Country to you!
