In Pennsylvania, deer don’t just cross the road, they make a deliberate, eye-contact-heavy decision to step out in front of you like it’s part of a statewide performance art piece. They’ll wait patiently in the woods while ten cars pass, then choose your vehicle specifically, usually on a blind curve, at dusk, in the rain, when your coffee is gone and your patience is hanging by a thread. One will jog halfway across, stop dead center, stare into your soul, then casually trot back the way it came just to send three more of its friends sprinting out behind it like a prank gone wrong. It never feels accidental. It feels coordinated. Like somewhere deep in the Pennsylvania woods, there’s a meeting and your license plate just got put on the list.

There's something deeply wrong about standing in a spot where three states are all fighting for control of your soul within 20 minutes. One wrong turn and you're in Ohio trying to pretend "Midwest nice" is a thing. Go the other way and you're in New York paying tolls to breathe.

Stay in Pennsylvania though, and you're surrounded by deer, potholes, and someone selling pepperoni rolls out of a gas station cooler. It's like a tri-state fever dream. Erie grit, Buffalo chaos, and Cleveland sadness all blending together under one grey sky. Only Pennsylvania could be the middle child of this dysfunctional family and still act like it's holding it all together.
