Our Wine Wednesday highlight this week is Leonardo Bussoletti’s Asla Ciliegiolo Pét-Nat, a sparkling wine from Umbria, Italy. Ciliegiolo is a lovely little grape mostly seen in tiny amounts in Chiantis, where it softens Sangiovese. But a few winemakers are giving this grape (whose name means little cherry) its time in the sun. Leonardo, whom we had the pleasure of meeting when he was in town with the local importer, , is one of those winemakers. Asla is part of his Chronicles of Narnia line, whimsical wines that are a nod to the influence the village of Narni had on C.S. Lewis. This wine is soft, bright, and cheerful, an optimistic wine that promises that this February will soon end. Enjoy a glass $2 off all evening at the Independent, or snag a bottle from Cuvée to enjoy at home!

We’re so back, y’all! We took the last few days to do some long-planned renovations and clean up from the bacchanal that was Fear & Loathing, and we’re ready to be open again. It’s the usual: 4-6 P.M. happy hour, delicious burgers, cold beer, and hot vinyl. See you at the Indy!

We’re closed this Tuesday through Thursday to tackle some maintenance projects and a deep clean. HOWEVER, our draft list and wine list will be available right next door at Hidden Harbor, so you won’t have to miss a beat in Squirrel Hill this week. We’ll be back on Friday and ready to drop the needle on a great weekend!

“I want you to have all the background,” I said. “Because this is a very ominous assignment—with overtones of extreme personal danger.… Hell, I forgot all about this beer; you want one?”

He shook his head.

“How about some ether?” I said.

“What?”

“Never mind. Let’s get right to the heart of this thing. You see, about twenty-four hours ago we were sitting in the Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel—in the patio section, of course…

Open at 4 pm with a killer draft list and weird and violent selection of cocktails and foods.

Come cozy up and listen to some records at your favorite little neighborhood bar before the snow starts following. We are closely monitoring the weather forecasts, but we believe that we’ll be business as usual tonight (4-midnight), with heavy snow starting around 3 am. If that changes, we’ll update you here.

…So I picked up the phone. It was my friend Bruce Innes, calling from the Circus-Circus. He had located the man who wanted to sell the ape I’d been inquiring about. The price was $750.

“What kind of a greedhead are we dealing with?” I said. “Last night it was four hundred.”

“He claims he just found out it was housebroken,” said Bruce. “He let it sleep in the trailer last night, and the thing actually s**t in the shower stall.”

“That doesn’t mean anything,” I said. “Apes are attracted to water. Next time it’ll s**t in the sink.”

“Maybe you should come down and argue with the guy,” said Bruce. “He’s here in the bar with me. I told him you really wanted the ape and that you could give it a fine home. I think he’ll negotiate. He’s really attached to the stinking thing. It’s here in the bar with us, sitting up on a goddamn stool, slobbering into a beer schooner.”

“Okay,” I said. “I’ll be there in ten minutes. Don’t let the bastard get drunk. I want to meet him under natural conditions.”

Saturday, January 31. You know the drill. Buy the ticket. Take the ride. A gross physical salute to the Good Doctor of Journalism.
