Azcentral - azcdining In the last few weeks, Taco Chelo has swept nearly every taco award in Phoenix, from all four categories at Taco Fest to its latest accolade, the title of Top Taco champ in The Republic’s fourth annual Top Taco readers’ choice contest.
“To get this kind of recognition twice in a month, it’s heaven,” said co-owner Gennaro Garcia.
Taco Chelo first opened in Phoenix in
2018. To have such a sudden, unprecedented burst in popularity in its eighth year is almost unheard of, especially for a restaurant that relies mostly on “boca en boca” or word-of-mouth advertising.
Garcia attributes their recent success, in part, to a brand-new approach to real heirloom corn tortillas that they adopted just three months ago.
