250+ indigenous grapes. 31 protected w**e designations. One country most of us are barely scratching the surface of. Last week in Scottsdale, we dug into Portugal with Dennis of Tappa W**es.

A few highlights from the lineup:

🍃 Vinho Verde — light, lemony, with that signature little spritz. Built for sunshine and drinking young.
☀️ Alentejo reds — generous fruit, mocha warmth, and tannins polished smooth by careful oak.
✨ Madeira — the immortal one. Malvasia rich with toffee and caramel; Verdelho bright and herbaceous. The best bottles can outlive us all.

Exceptional w**es, exceptional value, and grapes most of the world has never heard of. That's the magic of Portugal. 🍷

Everyone knows the Judgment of Paris. But do you know whose idea it actually was?

In 1976, an American woman named Patricia Gastaud-Gallagher took her summer vacation in Napa Valley. When she returned to Paris, she told her colleague Steven Spurrier: These w**es deserve to be seen.

What happened next changed w**e history forever. And her name has been largely missing from the story ever since.

Learn more about this story in our most recently blog post, The Untold Story of Patricia Gastaud-Gallagher: The American Woman Behind the Judgment of Paris.

Happy W**e Wednesday! Today, it's all about Viognier. 🍑

Nearly extinct in the 1960s (fewer than 20 hectares survived on the granite slopes of Condrieu) Viognier came back from the brink to become one of the world's most seductive whites.

Expect peach, apricot, honeysuckle, and a whisper of ginger, with a full, almost oily texture. Low in acid, high in perfume. Pour it alongside roast chicken, shellfish, or fragrant curry and let that stone-fruit aroma do the talking. 🥂

Next month's Grand Crew selections offer contrast, and span a continent.

A high-altitude Alvarinho from Portugal's Monção e Melgaço: crisp, citrusy, made for warm evenings.

And a Château Arnauld 2018 Haut-Médoc, Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel: structured Bordeaux from a beautiful vintage.

Bright and refreshing meets bold and ageworthy. Join our w**e club! https://www.vinum55.com/grand-crew-w**e-club/

The answer? Neither. And both. Let us explain. 🍷

The "screwcaps are cheap" myth needs to go. A bottle's closure isn't a price tag, it's a w**emaking decision based on how the w**e is meant to be enjoyed:

Cork lets in a whisper of oxygen over time, helping age-worthy w**es slowly evolve in the bottle. Tradition, romance, and that satisfying pop.

Screwcaps seal airtight and consistent, with zero risk of cork taint (that musty, wet-cardboard flaw). Perfect for fresh, aromatic w**es you'll drink young (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner).

Here's the part that surprises people: plenty of world-class, seriously expensive bottles twist right open. So the next time you hear a crack instead of a pop, don't judge, just pour. 🥂

If you love Pinot Noir, Gamay deserves to be on your radar! 🍇

This Beaujolais native pours bright ruby and bursts with fresh cherry, raspberry, and floral notes of peony and violet. High acidity, low tannins, and a juicy, refreshing finish make it irresistibly easy to drink—and even better with a slight chill. Pair it with roast chicken, charcuterie, or grilled salmon.

Last week in Scottsdale we tasted our way through one of the world's oldest—and most exciting—w**e regions, from the robust reds of Corbières and Fitou to the elegant expressions of Minervois and Faugères. Bursting with fruit, spice, and Mediterranean warmth.

A huge thank you to our friend Lauren for guiding us through Gérard Bertrand's stunning lineup—and to everyone who joined us.
