Braised low and slow then set atop a silky celery root puree with tender carrots and finished with a crown of crispy parsnips. It’s as much a sculpture as it is a supper.

Welcome to The Camac Street Reader: a series where we celebrate the art, history, and culture that our community is built on.

Bob Mackie started in 1961 as a young sketch artist at Paramount Studios, working under the famous costume designer Edith Head. By 1963 he was assisting Ray Aghayan, his partner, on The Judy Garland Show. His career took off with Carol Burnett and Sonny & Cher, and the “curtain rod dress” became television legend.

Beaded, feathered, and gloriously extra, his designs dressed Cher, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Bette Midler, and Madonna. He won a Tony, nine Emmys, and the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bob passed away last month, on September 14th, at 87. Every queen, diva, and dreamer owes him a little sparkle. We will never forget him. ✨

Continuing our Oktoberfest menu this week, Chef Bob is putting his own spin on a classic: Latke Fries!

Crispy, golden potato wedges are served with cool crème fraîche and a house-made apple compote for the perfect sweet-and-savory bite.

This week’s chef’s catch is steelhead trout! 🐟 Pan-seared and served atop a creamy whole grain mustard sauce, this fillet is paired with roasted fingerling potatoes and French green beans for a dish that’s as comforting as it is elegant.

Doc Dusty clues us in on his love for toxic g**s, French fries, and of course, reality show villains. Our Oktoberfest dinner was a night to remember, and we invited the wonderful food photographer Neal to capture it. We love how the images turned out: the food, the friends gathered around the table, and yes, the b**r.

Thank you to our gracious host Natira Yefchak for leading the evening and Chef Bob for taking us on an epic culinary journey.

Sweet news from the kitchen this week: our chef was feeling extra generous, so we’re serving not one but TWO dessert specials. 🍮🍑

First up, our Dulce de Leche Mousse: silky, caramel-rich, and impossibly light, layered with a buttery vanilla bean sablé and finished with some whipped cream.

Then there’s our Plum Strudel: warm, flaky pastry wrapped around jammy, tender plums, served with a pool of velvety crème anglaise.
