I could not have written this better myself!!! Pass this along to all the pregnant moms how want to breastfeed. The hospital is a great resource for the emergent problems or questions, but will never be able to teach you all the things in that short time frame.

One of the biggest misconceptions about breastfeeding is that the hospital lactation consultant is going to “teach you how to breastfeed” before you go home

And I need parents to understand this with love and honesty:
Most hospital lactation consultants simply do not have enough time 😞

Not because they don’t care
Not because they aren’t skilled
But because hospital systems are stretched thin

One lactation consultant may be covering:
• Multiple postpartum floors
• NICU
• New admissions
• Discharges
• Pumps and paperwork
• Babies with medical complications
• Moms recovering from surgery
• Charting and insurance requirements

Meanwhile you’re 24 hours postpartum, exhausted, bleeding, learning a brand new human… and someone pops in for 12 minutes while your baby is asleep 😅

Breastfeeding is not a one-time lesson
It is a learned relationship that unfolds over days and weeks

The hospital is often just:
✨ “Here’s how to latch”
✨ “Baby has jaundice start supplementing”
✨ “Baby lost too much weight start pumping”

And then parents go home thinking:
“Why does this suddenly feel impossible?”

Because the real challenges often start AFTER discharge:
• Milk coming in
• Engorgement
• Cluster feeding
• Ni**le pain
• Pumping
• Bottle refusal
• Oversupply
• Low supply worries
• Weight gain concerns
• Sleep deprivation
• Learning your actual baby

This is why postpartum lactation support matters so much 💛

Here’s what I wish every family knew:
• Take a prenatal breastfeeding class BEFORE birth
• Follow evidence-based lactation accounts during pregnancy
• Have a lactation consultant lined up before delivery if possible
• Don’t wait until things are “bad enough” to ask for help
• One good postpartum visit can change your entire experience

And if breastfeeding felt harder than you expected after leaving the hospital?
You did not fail a class everyone else passed

You were discharged from a major medical event while learning one of the most biologically complex things humans do

That deserves support

There is a HUGE misconception when it comes to breastmilk! Breastmilk, even in drops, is very beneficial to a baby’s immune system. I have several conversations with moms that want to wean at 6-8 months (for various reasons) but feel guilt about losing that immune building benefit.
Guess what?!? You can wean and still space out your remaining breastmilk to last longer! Babies can have breastmilk AND formula and still enjoy the benefits of breastmilk! It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing.
So many moms think they have to choose between the two. You don’t!
If you have 100 oz in the fridge, you can give one oz per day and it will last you over three months vs giving it all at once and it only lasting 4 days! Please reach out if you are needing help with weaning, milk storage, high lipase issues, or anything else! 850-390-6896

The Lindsey Clancy trial has consumed me so much the past few days. Working with postpartum moms daily, I have always tried to pick up on signs of PPD and PPA. After listening to this trial, I want to continue to offer even more support any way I can.

Skin to skin is SO important and beneficial for both mom and baby (and partner even!)
It allows baby to hear the heartbeat which is a familiar noise that comforts and soothes them. It provides warmth that they are also used to.
When I meet with families and mom is burnt out and tired and partner wants to help, I have mom feed baby, pass baby to partner for a good 1-2 hour skin to skin sesh while mom goes and naps, showers or just decompresses. It’s a win win for everyone!
