The Mojito. A Caribbean classic with the modern drink hailing from Havana.

Legend has it that when a Spanish Crew who had just crossed the Atlantic, with many of its crew getting sick along the way with scurvy and dysentery. They knowing the local Caribbean natives had remedies for various tropical illnesses, they sent a small boarding party ashore on what is now Cuba and the boarding party returned with ingredients for an effective medicine.

The combination of ingredients was called “aguardiente de caña” or “burning water". A crude form of rum made from sugar cane mixed with local tropical ingredients: lime, sugarcane juice, and mint.

Another theory is that it was invented by Sir Francis Drake. The "El Draque" cocktail was prepared with brandy instead of rum and is considered by some to be the original combination of these ingredients.

In September 1996, a Russian military frigate, known as Russian Destroyer #356, was sunk in Cayman Brac to make an artificial reef.
The ship was built in 1984 by the Russians and given to the Cuban navy. The Cubans, with no use for the vessel, sold it to the Cayman Islands in the mid-1990s for the express purpose of sinking. Later renamed the M/V Captain Keith Tibbetts, or “the Captain Keith”. She is 330 feet in length, and lies on its side between 2 coral reefs on Cayman Brac’s north shore.

Vasa was a Swedish warship, built between 1626 and 1628. The ship sank twenty minutes into her maiden voyage on 10 August 1628 after being hit by strong winds and flooding. Sinking less than a mile into her journey, it was regarded as a great embarrassment for the King of Sweden, and there were several salvage attempts, but none were successful.
It was not until 1961 that the shipwreck was successfully recovered, including thousands of artifacts. The hull of the ship was found to be remarkably in tact and with the help of some restoration, the ship is now a popular tourist attraction.

With Hurricane Sally still fresh on the mind, here are some throwback wrecks from the August hurricane of 1899 that destroyed multiple ships.

Photo 1: Numerous ships wrecked at Dog Island on the Florida panhandle. Of the nine vessels wrecked on Dog Island, four were abandoned.

Photo 2: Believed to be a Russian ship named the Latava, also wrecked on Dog Island. The masts snapped like twigs.

Photo 3: The Norwegian bark Hindoo which was blown ashore at St. George’s Island. She was built in July of 1877 in Germany and was 147 feet long. She lived to see another wave and was successfully repaired and reentered service as a barge.

Photo 4: An odd sight to behold, a large sailing ship in the middle of the forest. However, that’s exactly where the hurricane of 1899 decided to place this one. It is the 168-foot long schooner, the Warren Adams, built in July of 1884 in Maine. She sustained too much damage and never saw the sea again.

In honor of the birthday of the United States of America we will be looking at the Bonhomme Richard. Few Continental Navy ships chalked up a more distinguished combat record than Bonhomme Richard. Formerly known as Duc de Duras, she was originally a merchant ship built in France for the French East India Company in 1765, for service between France and the Orient. As a French donation to the Patriot cause, the aging frigate set sail in 1779 under Captain John Paul Jones and proceeded to capture 16 British vessels in a matter of weeks. On 23 September 1779, the squadron encountered the convoy of HMS Serapis and HM hired armed ship Countess of Scarborough, near Flamborough Head. Bonhomme Richard and Serapis entered a bitter engagement at about 6:00 p.m. The battle continued for the next four hours, costing the lives of nearly half of the American and British crews. British victory seemed inevitable, as the more heavily armed Serapis used its firepower to rake Bonhomme Richard with devastating effect. The commander of Serapis finally called on Jones to surrender. He replied, "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight!" Jones rallied his men and successfully captured Serapis after several hours of combat. Unfortunately, his victory came too late for Bonhomme Richard, which had caught fire during the exchange and taken several shots below its waterline. After spending 36 hours trying to keep it afloat, Jones and his crew reluctantly abandoned the ship and let it sink in the choppy waters of the North Sea. Its wreckage has since become the target of expeditions by everyone from British locals to professional salvage companies, the U.S. Navy and even author and adventurer Clive Cussler. A few of the teams have found wrecks matching the Bonhomme Richard’s description, but none of them has yet been identified as the missing ship.
