We say “melomel,” people say “what?”

A melomel is a mead made with fruit! Some of our most popular honey brews are made blackberry, pomegranate, cherry, and more. Our Pyments (honey + grapes) are also a hit, with Orange Muscat being a crowd favorite 🍇🍒🍯

At Nevada County Mead Company, we blend tradition with experimentation. Making mead is both a labor of love and an art form, with endless flavors to explore.

Mead has a rich history, dating back thousands of years and predating beer and wine. Ancient Greeks referred to it as "Ambrosia," the drink of the gods, while Norse mythology celebrates mead as a divine beverage. The term "honeymoon" originated from the tradition of gifting newlyweds enough mead to last one moon cycle, believed to enhance fertility and happiness.

Throughout history, mead has been celebrated in various cultures, from the Celts and Romans to the Egyptians and Chinese. Its resurgence today marks a revival of this timeless drink, connecting modern humans to our ancestral roots across the globe.

Like wine and beer, aging can significantly enhance the flavors of mead. Over time, the complex chemical reactions between the honey, yeast, and other ingredients mellow and develop richer, more intricate flavors. Traditional meads often benefit from longer aging periods, sometimes up to several years 🕰️🍯

Factors such as storage conditions (temperature, light, and humidity) and the type of container (glass, oak barrels) can also influence the aging process and final taste.
