An extraordinary chapter in American aviation history began right here in Pendleton.
The National Park Service has designated Pendleton, Oregon, an American World War II Heritage City, recognizing our community’s contributions to the war effort and commitment to preserving that history.
Pendleton Field was home to the 17th Bombardment Group, whose B-25 crews volunteered for the legendary Doolittle Raid. It later welcomed the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, the “Triple Nickles,” whose pioneering service as smokejumpers helped protect Northwest communities and forests during Operation Firefly.
Today, Eastern Oregon Regional Airport proudly carries forward the aviation legacy of Pendleton Field. This recognition honors the people who served here and the community that continues to tell their stories.
