Building out the space for The Sports Bra Maine takes serious teamwork, and we are proud to collaborate with incredible women-owned businesses helping to make it all happen! 🛠️🙌

Today we want to highlight two of them. Meet the powerhouse pros behind the build:

Nest Carpentry, owned by Jesse Hutchins: Jesse brings that elite athlete mindset to every project. She played college softball at University of Southern Maine and served as the pitching coach at Bates College for three years! When she’s not crafting top-tier custom woodwork, you’ll find her watching college softball, the WNBA, the NWSL, or locked into the Olympics. She’s a certified SUPER FAN! Or, she might be skiing at one of our local mountains. She’s been doing some exterior repairs on our building and will be custom building some furniture for us in the near future.

MJR Electrical, owned by MJ Reed: Before she became an electrician, MJ was already familiar with high-voltage situations from sports. She was a state championship-winning high school soccer goalie! Joining her on-site is apprentice electrician Emma, who ran cross country and Nordic skied back in high school in New Hampshire. They have both caught some Hearts of Pine games and are super excited for the USL W team next year. MJ scooped up her season tickets already! MJ and her crew are installing the lighting, and doing all the wiring and electrical work needed to get our screens ready to show women’s sports.

We can’t wait for you all to see the incredible space they’re helping us create!

We’re now hiring for our management team!

Here are the positions:

👩‍🍳Kitchen Manager/Head Cook

The Kitchen Manager/Head Cook will lead daily kitchen operations, mentor kitchen staff, enforce high sanitation standards, and manage inventory and scheduling. The pay range is $25 – $28 per hour based on experience. The deadline to apply is Friday, Oct. 23.

🍕Head Pizza Cook

The Head Pizza Cook will lead our pizza menu operations, develop pizza menu options, train pizza staff, ensure consistency and high sanitation standards, and track ingredient inventory. The pay range is $21 – $25 per hour based on experience. The deadline for this application is Friday, Oct. 30.

🍹Front of House Manager

The Front of House Manager will oversee daily FOH operations alongside the co-owners. This role will train and supervise staff, enforce high service standards, and maintain clear team communication. The pay range for this role is $20 – $24 per hour based on experience. Apply by Friday, Oct. 30.

History was made at YCCC, and we were so honored to be a part of it! 🦅💚

York County Community College celebrated a major milestone this fall as the YCCC Hawks Women’s Volleyball team, the FIRST women’s team sport in Hawks Athletics history, took the court for its inaugural season!
Community colleges play a vital role in the athletic landscape, serving as a powerful gateway for young women to pursue collegiate sports, develop as leaders, and build lifelong confidence both on and off the court. Expanding these programs creates invaluable access and opportunity for local student-athletes.

Adding to an already inspiring event, our co-owner, Emily, met Jennifer Laney and BJ Bertges, president and CEO of the USCAA. The USCAA recently made history as the first national collegiate athletic governing body with two women holding its top two leadership positions. Connecting with leaders actively paving the way for women in sports leadership made the day even more special.

The energy in the packed stands was electric, with family, friends, community members, and fellow Hawks athletes from cross country, men’s soccer, and baseball all coming together to show their support. The team put up a fierce, competitive fight against NHTI (who at 11-2 sits near the top of the standings), showing incredible grit from the very first serve.

As a proud event sponsor, we were so inspired to be there. Seeing everyone rally around this new women’s team was so awesome! We can’t wait to bring that same passion to our space opening in Portland! Go HAWKS!

Recently our co-owner Emily had the pleasure of meeting up with Sarah Marcotte (left) and Mallory Clark (hkychik4, right), the most decorated women's bowling doubles team in Maine history! They have taken the state title each of the last five years, and have earned numerous national awards including the top 2 women game (score of 567 out of a max of 600) in the '22-23 season and the top series (set of 3 consecutive games where they scored
1550) in '24-25. That's a ton of strikes!!!
Mallory also competes individually on the pwbatour professional tour! Did you know that when she competes at this level, she brings at least FIFTEEN bowling balls with her, and they each have a different purpose?! In fact she's competing TODAY at the PWBL Albany regional - let's gooooooo!!!!

Sarah and Mallory very generously offered to donate some memorabilia to display at the Sports Bra Maine! This was so appreciated, especially because we were admittledly uneducated about elite level bowling, but we learned so much from these truly impressive women. In addition to their bowling accolades they're also involved in governance of the sport and in promoting youth participation. We'll be putting out a wider call to grow our women's sports memorabilia collection in a month or so, but in the meantime, please take Sarah and Mallory's lead and reach out if you are involved in pro/elite level sport or have connections to women who are - we'd love to have ALL the sports and athletes of Maine represented on our walls.

Things are moving fast at 476 Stevens Ave! Every day gets us one step closer to opening Maine’s premier destination dedicated entirely to watching and celebrating women’s sports. Here is a look at what we’ve been up to behind the scenes. 👀🙌

Inside the Demo & Design: We’re reworking the old layout with our partners at Woodhull so every seat gets an unobstructed view of the game. Plus, check out our windows next time you pass by!

Built by Women: We are proud to collaborate with local women artists and skilled tradeswomen to craft the venue, uplifting women-owned businesses both on screen and in our walls.

This Sunday is Porchfest, one of the BEST days in our Deering Center neighborhood. This huge, family-friendly celebration of music, art, community, and neighbors features over 90 musical acts performing on neighborhood porches from noon to 5 p.m. The Porchfest parade starts right in front of our location at 476 Stevens Avenue at 12:15 p.m.! 🙌

We’ll be set up in the parking lot with a tent and table for the whole event. Come by, say hit, and hang out! We’ll have cold water to refill your water bottle throughout the party, and all our merch for sale!

Some other neighborhood shoutouts! Our neighbors across the street, The Light Church, are holding a food drive, so please consider bringing an item. And, you can volunteer during Porchfest for as little as 1 hour out of the whole day and earn a coveted Porchfest T-shirt. More info on volunteering, the schedule, maps, road closures, and everything else you might want to know is on the Deering Center Neighborhood Association website at the link in our bio.

It’s not every day a Mainer competes in a world championship. But, this holiday weekend, Falmouth’s Clara Brown is representing Maine and Team USA at the UCI Paracycling World Championships in Huntsville, Alabama in two events:

🚴‍♀️ Saturday - C3 Time Trial - individual waves starting at 11am.
🚴‍♀️ Monday - C3 Road Race - 11:17am - LIVE-STREAMED on Youtube (ucichannel, link in bio)

Let’s celebrate and support Clara and women’s paracycling this Labor Day with a challenge. On Monday, how many Maine restaurants, bars, and venues can we get to air the big race?
