The Irish flag was designed in 1848, but it took nearly seventy years and a rebellion before most Irish people ever saw it flown.

The tricolour was presented to Ireland by Thomas Francis Meagher, a Young Irelander who had witnessed the French tricolour in Paris and adapted the concept for Ireland. Green represented the Gaelic and Catholic tradition, orange represented the Protestant and Williamite tradition, and the white in the center symbolized a lasting truce between the two.

Despite being introduced in 1848, the flag saw very little use for decades afterward, largely overshadowed by other emblems of Irish nationalism. It wasn't until the 1916 Easter Rising, when it was raised over the General Post Office in Dublin, that the tricolour truly entered the national consciousness as a symbol of Irish independence.

What makes the flag remarkable isn't just what it represents, but how deliberately it was designed to represent peace between two traditions rather than the victory of one over the other.
