We are not early birds. We’re not a night owls. We dive bar possums running exclusively on caffeine, ni****ne, bad decisions, and whatever snack we found behind the bar from the past shift. You can always count on us to say the exact thing I shouldn’t say, at the exact moment I shouldn’t say it.
Guest - You probably shouldn’t have said that.

Us- but yet here we are.

Welcome to the life of a dive bar bartender.

That feeling when you’re working in a Florida dive bar in June. The AC is fighting for its life. The ice machine sounds like it’s filing a workers comp claim. You’re sweating through places you didn’t even know could sweat. The jukebox is overheating. The regulars are arguing with a ceiling fan like it’s a city council meeting. You’ve served 47 beers, 19 Fat Hookers, 3 S*x With The Bartender shots, and one guy just asked if it’s always this hot while standing directly under a sign that says WELCOME TO FLORIDA. Then the front door opens. A cool breeze rolls in. Your relief walks through the door. Angels start singing. Bald eagles soar overhead. George Strait personally hands you a cold beer. The sweat evaporates off your body like an ex disappearing after rent is due. You suddenly remember your own name. Colors become brighter. Food has flavor again. You don’t walk out of that bar you ascend

To all the dive bar bartenders surviving one Florida heat stroke at a time. We salute you !!!

Well Dive Bar Fam, the alarm clock just committed a hate crime, the coffee hasn’t kicked in, my back sounds like a bag of microwave popcorn, and somehow it’s already time to go to work. Time to unlock the gates of chaos and see what fresh nonsense awaits. Will someone try to pay with a guitar pick? Will a customer explain how to run a bar despite never having run a lemonade stand? Will somebody lose their ID, their dignity, and their flip-flops all in the same night? Who knows. All I know is somewhere out there a bartender is icing down beer, a cook is questioning their life choices, a security guard is preparing to explain the same rule 47 times, and a dive bar manager is gearing up for another shift fueled by caffeine, sarcasm, and pure stubbornness. Wish me luck. The circus opens in a few hours and apparently I’m one of the clowns.

People see a dive bar manager and think it’s all about pouring drinks and counting cash drawers. Truth is, that’s the easy part. It’s about putting out fires before anyone notices there’s smoke. It’s remembering names, stories, favorite drinks, and somehow keeping track of 100 different things at once. It’s being part therapist, part referee, part event planner, part janitor, and occasionally part bouncer. Some nights are absolute chaos. Some nights are smooth sailing. Some nights leave you questioning every life decision you’ve ever made. And some nights remind you exactly why you love this business. A laugh with a regular, a packed house singing along to a band, a stranger becoming a friend, or seeing people forget their problems for a few hours. This crazy life has given me friendships I’ll never forget, lessons I couldn’t have learned anywhere else, and enough stories to fill a thousand barstools. Here’s to the late nights, the 4 AM closes, the live music, the regulars, the staff that become family, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with running a dive bar. The money pays the bills, but the memories are what keep you coming back.

A little different post today. I posted a recent picture and some people decided the most important thing they saw was the lump on my sternum and started making unnecessary comments . For those wondering, it’s an old deformity from a broken sternum that healed that way no big mystery. What got me thinking is that the same people who have something to say now probably would have had something to say about the old picture too. The guy who was over 200 pounds heavier. The guy fighting battles nobody else could see. That’s when I realized something. Some people will criticize you when you’re overweight. Some will criticize you when you lose the weight. Some will criticize your appearance, your job, your dreams, your success, or your failures. If you spend your life trying to make everyone happy, you’ll spend your life chasing a finish line that doesn’t exist. The truth is, you never know what someone has survived to become the person standing in front of you today. The scars you see might be proof of a battle they won. So be proud of how far you’ve come, keep working on yourself, keep growing, keep getting healthier, and keep chasing your goals. And before tearing someone else down, take a good look in the mirror. Chances are there’s plenty there that still needs work too. The only opinion that truly matters is the one staring back at you when you look in that mirror. Keep moving forward. The people talking about you aren’t carrying your weight, fighting your battles, or living your life. You are.
