END OF WATCH: Chicago Police Department Officer Areanah Preston, May 6, 2023.

At approximately 0142 hours, the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot alert system quickly registered nine shots had been fired in the area of the 8100 block of South Blackstone Avenue in Avalon Park. A robbery had also been reported nearby where officers were preoccupied. Around 0215 hours, an officer in the area located Areanah suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She had just finished her shift and was returning home. The officer put her into a patrol vehicle and took her to University of Chicago Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Areanah had been with Chicago PD for the past three years and worked in the Calumet District. She had long aspirations to become a police officer. She was preparing for graduation after earning her master’s degree in Criminology from Loyola University Chicago. By all accounts, Areanah sought to truly make an difference on how policing was done and the impact she could make on people’s lives. Areanah’s father, Allen, described his daughter as “a beautiful soul who always saw good in people.”

Areanah’s killer has not been found. Yet.

May she rest in eternal peace. We have the watch, sister.
