Mr. Welch is affectionately known about town as “Jimmer” – He is the owner of Mickey’s Bar & Restaurant (Mickey’s as know by the locals) which has been in the Welch Family since its establishment in the 1920’s by Jim’s Grandparents which initially operated it as a gas station up until prohibition in 1932 – The business was passed on to Jim’s parents and then on to Jim. Jim has owned & operated Mickey’s for most of his adult years – It has been a staple in the community since 1932 – Mickey’s holds many fundraising events throughout the year for numerous non-profit organizations and has raised considerable money over the years. One of the largest, if not the largest, fund raising event is the Annual Game Dinner which is normally held every March/April by the Mickey’s Sportsmen Club – 2026 will be the 13th year for this event. Last year the event brought in over $12,000 for the local community non-profits (Palmyra Community Center, PalMac Youth Baseball & other local foundations).
In addition, Jim is engaged in local town & village operations – He initially started those activities working on the Zoning Board of Appeals and later on the Palmyra Planning Board in the 1990’s – Jim has been continuously elected as a Town Board Councilman for 29 years and most recently as the Deputy Supervisor – Jim proudly takes an active role in local politics. Jim is a quiet guy that goes about his business not seeking fame, fortune or praise, but doing the right thing and always there to help. We believe Jim is well deserving of this honor, in light of the many things he has given back to the community over the years, without seeking any recognition.
We are proud and feel very privileged to nominate James “Jimmer” Welch & his business Mickey’s Bar & Restaurant for Wayne County 2025 Small Business Owner Award.
