Melinda Tremaglio, a Major Donor to the Archives Dies
Born on March 23, 1942 in Wallingford, Connecticut, Melinda Tremaglio died on October 18, 2025, here in Palm Springs. A prolific organizer, TV producer, and women’s activist; more than 25 boxes of her work and life were donated to the Archives in 2023 that are continuing to be cataloged and digitized.
Sent to Catholic school—a place she disliked for its rules and dresses—Melinda left home immediately after graduation and joined the Army, determined to serve her country. A warrior at heart, she dreamed of a military career, but in 1961 she was discharged for being gay.
A lifelong activist, Melinda championed women’s rights and always stood up for the underdog. In the 1980s, she produced over 100 episodes of Lifestyle Update, a weekly gay entertainment show, and was named West Hollywood’s “Woman of the Year” in 1985. She helped campaign for the city’s incorporation and its first le***an mayor, earning numerous commendations for community service—from promoting animal welfare to documenting the 1987 March on Washington.
After moving to Palm Springs in 2001, Melinda continued her devotion to service. She served as President of the local NOW chapter, First Vice Commander of AMVETS Post 66, Vice President of Well in the Desert, and held leadership roles in Pride and other civic organizations. Her awards for activism, human rights, and community engagement were countless.
A natural producer, Melinda created West Hollywood’s Halloween celebration and Palm Springs’ “Halloween on Arenas” and “Springfest” Easter Bonnet Contest—events that still thrive today. She loved to spark new ideas, set them in motion, and then step aside for others to carry on.
Melinda was known as both fierce and gracious—a fighter for justice with a soft heart. She could be blunt, but never insincere; what you saw was what you got. Though she had no children of her own, she lovingly co-parented Chelsea Lee and Forest Keenan and cherished her grandchild, Alyssa Taylor. Her spirit endures in the community she built and the causes she advanced.
A Memorial Service is planned for tomorrow, Thursday, November 6, 6 pm at The LGBTQ+ Community Center of the Desert.
