🍻 An Important Update from Tim / Black Bear Brewing 🍻

I want to clear up some confusion about what’s happening in our old location and with the Black Bear Brewing name.

To be absolutely clear: I am no longer involved with the business that is opening in our former space. While it may use a name similar to Black Bear Brewing, it is not the same business, and I have no connection to it. The new operation is using the name without my approval and is not part of the original Black Bear Brewing that served this community for 20 years.

Black Bear Brewing, the small, independent brewery we built together since 2004, was forced to close last year after overwhelming challenges. Despite every effort to rebuild through a partnership, it fell apart when commitments weren’t honored, leaving me with no choice but to close for good.

I know many Mug Club members are upset and asking about their mugs. I completely understand — those mugs represent years of support and friendship. Unfortunately, the mugs are currently stored offsite, and access has been complicated by this situation. I’m doing what I can to recover them and will share updates if and when that becomes possible.

Please know — the place opening now is not the Black Bear Brewing you supported. That chapter has closed, and I’ll always be grateful for every single one of you who made it special.

Thank you for 20 amazing years of beer, music, and community. You’ll always be part of what made Black Bear Brewing “Orono’s Living Room.”

With gratitude,
Tim

🍻 A Heartfelt Farewell from Black Bear Brewing 🍻

After 20 incredible years, we’re deeply saddened to share that Black Bear Brewing, as you've known it for the past 20 years, will not be returning. It’s not the way we imagined our 20th anniversary year would go, but we want to take this moment to reflect with gratitude on the community that made us Orono’s Living Room.

Founded in 2004, Black Bear was one of Maine’s earliest craft breweries — proudly licensed as Small Maine Brewer #14, the 14th brewery in the state. Built on a DIY spirit, local pride, and great beer, we became a gathering place for music, conversation, and connection. We’ll always cherish the bands, the Mug Club members, and the friendships we made over the years.

Last year, we paused operations in hopes of rebuilding and reopening through a new partnership. Our taproom needed major repairs — from structural floor work to brewery drainage — and we entered into an agreement we hoped would secure Black Bear’s future.

Unfortunately, circumstances outside our control forced us to step away. The partnership we counted on to bring Black Bear back didn’t work out, and ultimately, we were unable to reopen under our management. It’s not the ending we wanted, but it’s the reality we face.

What we do want to focus on is the legacy. Because Black Bear Brewing wasn’t just a brand — it was a community. It was a home for local artists and bands. A launchpad for brewers. A safe place for people to come together. It was built with love, and it thrived because of all of you.

There may be something new that opens in our place — but we will not be involved.

Thank you — truly — for making Black Bear Brewing what it was. For supporting local. For believing in us. We’ll carry the memories with us always.

With love and one final cheers,
Tim, Sara & the Black Bear Brewing Crew 2004 - 2024

P.S. If you have photos, stories, or favorite moments from the taproom, please share them in the comments. It would mean the world to us to celebrate those times together one more time.
