Not sure any of us could predict where Hanson’s would be when it first opened in January of 2013. We were inspired by a classical style of bartending that could be considered antiquated by current-day cocktail trends. We believed in providing a space meant for moments and memories. Hell we even took vodka off the backbar (bold for the time). We had an ideal, an ethos and when you don’t waver from it you find yourself here, 10 years later as a bastion of Orlando’s cocktail culture. Thank you to everyone who made it possible from the guests, the bartenders, barbacks, hosts, our gracious former landlord who got us through the pandemic, and the peers who motivated us. It’s been an incredible decade.

Join us tomorrow on Wednesday, January 25th as we celebrate 10 years of cocktails, “snacks,” sad songs and rooftop nights. All house cocktails will be $10, there will be bottle giveaways throughout the night, and a complimentary daiquiri made “our way” at midnight. Thank you again and we’ll toast to another 10 years tomorrow night!

We would like to announce that we are once again hosting our 9th annual New Year’s Eve party here at the shop. The ticket price of $115+tax will include open bar, house-made punch, hors d’oeuvres, champagne toast, and also gratuity. As with every year it promises to be a fantastic time. We will only be making 30 tickets available and they are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. It wasn’t that long ago that our sister bar Herman’s Loan Office was open just down the street. It was at this bar that a certain cocktail later known as the Death Rattle was first poured. It was also here where Low End Theory would come through the speakers as we poured you flaming Chartreuses. Many of you that we served then are our regulars now here at Hanson’s. And while much of those two years were a complete blur it still afforded us lasting memories that bring a smile to our faces and frankly sometimes a sense of dread. What were some of your favorite memories of a bar that embodied the line, “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

This Friday, September 25th we’ll be reopening our doors for the first time in 6 months. While some things may be different, not all change is bad. Look at what our immensely talented friend Sean Jones () created for us! We had reached out to Sean, a Hanson’s alum himself, to see if he could design something that could help our furloughed staff. Not only did he graciously accept but he along with the folks at gave us only our second Hanson’s shirt and first in two years.

The Covid-19 pandemic has severely affected many bars, clubs, and nightlife establishments across the country. Here in Orlando, a state government mandate has required all nightlife establishments to shutter until further notice. While cocktail bartending has been and will continue to be a passion of ours it provides a relatively modest living. Yet we continue on because it is indeed a special kind of bartending and service. We miss the Tuesday nights chatting with customers about all things life and spirits. We miss the weekend nights when we're trying to execute the drinks as quickly and as flawlessly as possible. We miss the sounds, the rhythms, each other, and most importantly you. Your support will help our staff stay afloat during this uncertain and unprecedented time. We hope to see and raise a glass to all of you soon.

A small handful of us came through the shop today to clean and take inventory but mostly I think it’s because we kind of missed each other. It’s always interesting to see the bar in quite literally a different light; without the candles, the patrons, and the indescribable and yet knowing hum of cocktails being made. When we get through this (and we will) we’ll be able to remember it as a time when we got to view the world and each other in a different light, a kinder and gentler one.

If you’re wondering how we’re doing, the situation is less than ideal but we continue to support one another because we are family here. We’re eager to get back at it once we’re able to but until then take care. “Just remember the sweet is never as sweet without the sour.” @ Hanson's Shoe Repair
