The Ghost at Odessa’s Barn Door
Every town has a ghost story. In Odessa, it may be sitting down for dinner.
For decades, employees and customers at the Barn Door Steakhouse have shared stories about a mysterious spirit known simply as “Billy.” According to local legend, Billy haunts the restaurant’s Pecos Depot section—a historic railroad depot that was moved from Pecos to Odessa and later incorporated into the Barn Door.
The story goes that Billy was killed while the building still served as a railroad depot. Whether the tale is true has never been proven, but many employees believe the spirit followed the depot when it was relocated to Odessa.
Over the years, Billy has been blamed for a variety of strange occurrences. Staff have reported hearing footsteps in empty rooms after closing, voices when no one else was present, and doors opening or closing on their own. Some employees claim chairs and table settings have been mysteriously moved overnight. Others have described finding fresh drink-ring marks on tables despite no matching glasses having been used.
A few witnesses even claim to have seen the apparition of a man in old-fashioned clothing standing briefly in hallways or peering into rooms before disappearing.
But what makes this story fascinating isn’t whether Billy is real.
It’s that the legend is tied to a genuine piece of West Texas history. The Pecos Depot once welcomed travelers crossing the frontier, survived relocation to Odessa, and eventually became part of one of the Permian Basin’s most iconic restaurants. Somewhere along the way, history and folklore became intertwined.
Today, visitors come for the steaks—but many leave asking about the ghost.
Billy has become part of the Barn Door’s history. In a town built on oil, railroads, and frontier grit, Odessa’s most famous resident may be one who never checked out.
