We have a little bittersweet news to share:

After being part of the Zillie’s family since 2012, Chris is moving off Ocracoke. Thankfully, he’ll still be up the beach on the Outer Banks, so this is more of a “See you later,” not “Goodbye.”

For so many of us at Zillie’s, Chris has been one of the first welcoming faces they see - he remembers names, favorite drinks, and stories from visits years ago. In fact, Chris knows so many customers by name that we’ve occasionally had to ask him who they were. Sometimes, he even tells us the right name.😉

He’s been a fixture behind the counter, an essential part of our wine tastings, the chef behind our wine dinners, and our right hand. He’s the person who knows where everything is. So, after he leaves, please allow us a little grace if we wander around looking confused.

Chris has been part bartender, part chef, part wine expert, part island historian, and part keeper of information the rest of us probably should have written down. His job description was “Take care of everything Ray forgot about.” Mostly, though, he’s a friend.

We knew Chris for several years before buying Zillie’s, and he was one of the folks who encouraged us to take the plunge. Depending on your perspective, he deserves a portion of the credit or part of the blame - but we’ll be forever grateful.

So, here’s to you, Chris - Thanks for everything. We’ll miss you, but we reserve the right to call you when something breaks.

Not all Sauvignon Blancs drink alike - DAOU’s Optimist (California!) finds a delicious middle ground.

It’s less grassy than a typical New Zealand style and riper and more generous than a mineral-driven French Sauvignon Blanc. Subtle grapefruit, lime, tropical fruit and a touch of honeysuckle, with lively acidity and a clean finish.

Crisp without being tart, fruity without being sweet—it’s a Sauvignon Blanc for people who think they don’t like Sauvignon Blanc! (Really 😉)

We received a pretty special piece of mail at Zillie’s this week.

Opus One has once again invited Zillie’s to receive an allocation of their legendary wine.

For a little independent wine shop on a little island, we’re both humbled and proud to be offered an allocation from one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wineries.

We try to make Zillie’s a place where you can discover something new, find an old favorite, or occasionally come across a bottle that’s truly exceptional. It’s nice to know that, after all these years, folks in the wine world have noticed what we’re doing here on Ocracoke.

We will be accepting preorders for our Opus One allocation. Quantities will be limited, so if you’d like us to reserve a bottle for you, please message us or swing on by!

We’re thinking about getting a dog and training it to get us wine. It probably should be a Bordeaux Collie 🤣
