Christmas in 2010 as I’m finishing up my thesis year in Architecture school I get a 5 gallon home brew kit for a gift. I hadn’t given brewing beer much thought. At that point, I just loved visiting the breweries that made my favorite beers. Before that break was over I had made the first concoction, a magic hat clone, not an exact clone but still tasty. Good enough to try again, so the second one
had to be and IPA. That went so well, by the third I’m already playing around, creating new recipes and doing it well. By spring time had come I‘d made at least eight batches and recreated two. A friend had sent a link to a homebrew contest during Philly Beer week that her friend had help run, needing a few more brewers to round out the event. More or less a cattle call, but I took a shot in the dark and entered with a clean crisp floral hopped pale ale and an original creation, chocolate sarsaparilla stout. The latter did end up taking down this show of seasoned homebrewers and emerging microbreweries. After dozens of brews over the years, being able to copy beers that I like, re-create recipes that were made from scratch and winning a homebrew contest, the thought starts creeping in that there may be something to this. Maybe I can bring this feeling, one of these spaces that I admire, to my hometown. In 2015 I started that process and formed an LLC. Since then, I’ve been piecing it together here and there as I handle work and family. With lots of research, hard work, and the help of family and friends, I believe I’ve got enough pieces to make this vision a reality.
