Hey everyone. JJ here. Last Saturday I completed the third swim for the St Jude Children’s Hospital fundraiser. The Bridge to Bridge was 6.2 miles of pure swimming nirvana. I did it in 1 hour, 37 minutes. A bucket list adventure I’ll never forget.

What I haven’t shared about my journey is this. Two years ago, I was flattened by surgery and a cancer treatment so aggressive you can only do it once in your life. A second time would kill you. 35 radiations and seven chemo treatments in the span of 7 weeks. I lost 40 pounds and struggled to stay conscious standing up from the couch. 18 months ago, I couldn’t swim more than 25 yards without taking a sip of water (ironically) because the radiation left me with severe dry mouth due to low-functioning salivary glands that had a 50/50 shot of ever getting better. It would cause me to gag and throw up to swim farther.

Last Saturday was a graduation of sorts. This was my way of not holding on to things that slow you down, but instead rising to the challenges life brings. The best things in life don’t come easy, but so many wonderful things are within our reach, and some are really worth fighting for!

Some interesting things happened over the past few months. I’ve inspired people. Some are going through their own cancer treatments; some are just trying to live their best lives. Some people think I’m insane, and some people became great friends in the process. So, I thought I would share, in case this story can lift others up.

Although I’ve met the $5000 goal for my fundraiser, I plan to leave it up a little longer to see if we can help out St. Jude even more! After going through what I did, I’ll do anything I can to make it easier in the future, especially for children battling.

I am a cancer survivor.

And I am thriving!
