Eight years ago, when we first began planning Awakening Coffee & Taphouse, Joe’s mom had already suffered her stroke, and we were beginning to understand the reality of vascular dementia. Back then, we had no idea what the next eight years would hold for our family, only that we wanted to create a place filled with comfort, community, and little pieces of the people we loved most.

One of those pieces became a drink.

Her name was Margaret, but almost nobody called her that. To everyone who knew and loved her, she was simply “Peppy.” She had been Peppy since she was a little girl, and that name stayed with her her entire life.

And Peppy only drank iced coffee.

So when we created a vanilla lavender iced latte, it felt right to name it after her. Sweet, comforting, a little unique, and something that quietly became part of Awakening from the very beginning.

For years, we’ve smiled every time someone ordered a “Peppy Latte.” It was always made in honor of her.

But today… it carries a different kind of meaning.

Today, hearing her name called out behind the counter feels heavier. More sacred somehow. What started years ago as a tribute has quietly become a remembrance.

The Peppy Latte will always stay on our menu. And now, every single one made carries the memory of the woman who inspired it — a mom, grandma, friend, and such an important part of our story.

So today, if you order a Peppy Latte, know it’s made with a little extra love.
