What a trip it's been.

In 1984 Joe and Susan Bruno established Pasta Nostra with the help of Joe's brother Tommy, sister Mary Ann, and their sons Max and Damon. What began as a humble fresh pasta store and trattoria was very quickly vaulted into regional and national acclaim, beginning what would evolve into a near-forty-year mission to nourish and uplift local residents with that rarest of restaurant meals: one prepared with the no-expense-spared, no-corners-cut, relentlessly attentive, painstaking devotion with which one might cook for one's dearest friends and family, if endowed with decades of accumulated skill and a boundless pantry.

But all things must come to an end, and after ceaselessly toiling well into his seventies Chef Joe has decided to hang up his toque, as it were. The lights go down at the end of August, for ever more. We hope you'll join us for reminiscence and a farewell meal.

In the first century Pliny the Elder mentioned In Vino Veritas. He was referring to an already popular expression, prosaically misinterpreted in our hollowed-out age, as "a drunken person is more likely to be truthful".

While we have our democracies and our cell phones, we can be rather flat and painfully ignorant of what truth even means, much less what it might be.

Some time before cell phones, surveying a table full of empty bottles with my friends, I picked one up, held it to the side of my face, and told them that wine is "una telefonata dei Dei" (a phone call from the Gods).

Greater men than I have made similar observations, or gotten similar phone calls.

What Pliny meant, what the Romans meant, what I meant, is that the vine is a gift left over from the Garden and that its juice can lead us to the light.

But the truth? Well, that's another matter. Not even wine can do that.

Our pasta is available to cook at the Double L Market in Westport.

You can also come down to Pasta Nostra and enjoy some with a great bottle of well chosen wine in our architecturally distinguished dining room. OR just grab some to cook at home.
