Turning 18 creates a legal line that a lot of families don’t realize is there until they run into it.

Your son or daughter may still want you involved in medical decisions, banking, school issues, or other important parts of life. But once they’re legally an adult, that involvement is no longer automatic.

That’s where the right documents matter.

A healthcare power of attorney, financial power of attorney, and appropriate educational releases can allow your adult child to choose who is able to step in and help when needed.

The important part is doing it before there’s a crisis.

These documents can always be updated later as life changes, relationships change, or a spouse becomes the better person to serve in that role.

If you have a child turning 18, heading to college, or simply starting to handle more of life independently, this is a very good time to get the basics in place.

When your family is grieving, even simple decisions can feel overwhelming.

That’s why a good estate plan does more than distribute assets. It gives the people you love direction when they may not be in the best position to make difficult decisions.

Who should handle what? Where are the important documents? What did you want? Who should they call?

The more you answer now, the less your family has to figure out later.

A clear plan is one more way to take care of the people you love.

Labor Day is a good reminder that most of what gets built in life takes time.

Careers. Businesses. Homes. Families. Savings. A sense of stability.

None of it happens overnight.

Today is a chance to step away from the work for a minute and appreciate what all of that effort has created.

From all of us at Corriveau Law, we hope you enjoy the long weekend, spend time with the people you care about, and take a well-earned day off.

There’s no magic birthday when estate planning suddenly becomes necessary.

The better question is: Are there people, decisions, or assets in your life that you’d want handled a certain way if something happened to you?

For many people, that starts much earlier than they expect. Turning 18, buying a home, getting married, having children, starting a business, or simply becoming responsible for your own finances can all be reasons to start the conversation.

Estate planning isn’t something you “graduate into.” It’s something that should grow and change along with your life.

So, what age did you first start thinking about it?

The best time to think about long-term care isn’t when your family is already trying to find a nursing home.

It’s while you still have choices.

Long-term care can be extraordinarily expensive, and there are legal strategies that may help protect assets and prepare for potential Medicaid eligibility. But some of those strategies come with timelines and rules that make when you plan incredibly important.

That doesn’t mean you know you’ll need nursing home care. It means you’ve spent a lifetime building what you have, and it’s worth understanding your options before a crisis makes decisions for you.

Estate planning isn’t only about what happens after you’re gone. It’s also about protecting yourself and your family while you’re here.

Want to know what planning ahead could look like for your family? Call Corriveau Law and let’s talk before you need the plan.

Divorce is emotional. The process doesn’t have to make it more expensive than it already is.

Joe’s approach to mediation is practical: separate the financial issues from the emotional ones, work through what can actually be calculated, and avoid spending thousands of dollars fighting over things that won’t change the outcome.

Assets. Support. Expenses. Property. Those are things we can put numbers to and work through.

Anger, resentment, and old arguments are real, but they usually aren’t solved by paying attorneys to keep the fight going.

That’s why mediation can be such a valuable option. It gives both people a chance to make decisions, understand the numbers, and reach an agreement without turning every disagreement into litigation.

Especially when children are involved, the goal isn’t just getting divorced. It’s getting through the divorce in a way that still allows everyone to move forward afterward.

If you’re considering divorce and want to understand whether mediation could be a better fit, call Corriveau Law.

Your family probably knows your favorite stories, your traditions, and the things that mattered most to you.

That doesn't mean they know who should manage your estate, how your assets should be distributed, or what decisions you wanted made.

Love doesn't replace legal instructions.

The best estate plans remove uncertainty so your family isn't left making difficult decisions without guidance.

If you want to make life easier for the people you care about, don't leave them with assumptions. Leave them with a plan.

One of the biggest misconceptions about estate planning is that the documents are the hardest part.

They aren't.

The hardest part is often having the conversation.

Your family may know you. They may know what matters to you. But that doesn't always mean they know the decisions you'd want made if you couldn't make them yourself.

So here's today's question:

Have you ever actually told your family what you want?

Not what you assume they know. What you've clearly communicated.

Leave a comment below. Sometimes the right conversation starts with a simple question.
