True North Kitchen + Bar is a restaurant just like it sounds, a kitchen with a bar. True North Kitchen + Bar opened quietly on September 1, 2017 at 159 Bridge Street in Weymouth, MA. True North is a modern American Tavern that brings urban vibes to the suburbs. Executive Chef Ben Campbell, formerly of No. 9 Park in Boston, delivers delicious and distinctive comfort food made with fresh seasonal ingredients. Menu items rotate frequently but you can count on a seasonal soup, pasta, seafood, and meat selection always being available. Chef Ben flaunts his creativity by taking traditional tavern food to the next level. Customers highly recommend the chicken pot poutine, fish and shrimp po’ boy tacos, burger with house made “everything spiced” bun, and butternut squash flan. The restaurant offers a full bar with a variety of craft beers on tap and the bottle and a wide selection of wines by the glass. The physical space of True North was previously occupied by Kelly’s Landing for 38 years. The space has been gutted and renovated and now seats 90 people with a 22 seat bar. Inside, the décor matches the modern American food with industrial accents such as iron-welded soffits to store liquor and Edison bulb light fixtures. Seating options include high top bar tables, banquet seating, as well as booths. True North Kitchen + Bar is owned and operated by Janet and Joe Campbell. They were partners in the restaurants that made up the Cohasset Harbor Resort (Atlantica, The Olde Salt House, and Brisa Tapas, and Wine Bar) before they sold their interests in 2016. Prior to joining the Cohasset Harbor Resort team as Managing Partner, Joe was the former Vice President of Operations of Legal Seafoods. Janet owned and operated a dance studio for 16 years before joining Joe in the business. As previously mentioned, their son, Ben, is the Executive Chef and runs the back of the house operations with his friend and colleague from No. 9 Park, Michael Devaney, as his Sous Chef. Their daughter Alyssa helps out with the bookkeeping and marketing, when she’s not working as a Special Education teacher.

We had a birthday celebration at our house last night. We've all been working non-stop for the past three weeks. We did it the easy way. Grabbed a Quart each of Bolognese and Scampi Sauce, two pounds of imported pasta, some garlic bread from the frozen foods, a salad from the salad bar. Total cost $75. It fed 6 adults and two kids with plenty of leftovers. (I did cooked up some garlicky shrimp for the scampi). Restaurant Quality at home for 1/3 the price.

Ten days in and what a response! So nice to see the regulars from TNKB enjoying TNMp. Many new products coming. However, we have had so many catering inquiries I thought I would post the menus. More to come including the Mongolian Chicken Tenders that are a favorite on Sundays while watching the Pats. We are tweaking a few things as to our hours. We will open at 11 am. Soon it will be 7 am as we get our coffee and breakfast ready.

Today is the Day! Looks like a 2 PM opening as we are still working through some equipment issues. What a tremendous job Ben, Thomas, Nery, Zach, Barbara, Richie and Jermaine did getting all the food ready. I've been doing this for a long time and have worked with some great chefs. Anne Rosensweig, Lidia Bastinich and Tony Bourdain in New York, Jasper White and Lidia Shire in Boston (They were both cooks at The Parker House in 1975) and Jasper was at LSF with me. I would take Ben every day of the week. His passion for food, his teaching ability, his palate are second to none. Here is a peek of some what will be available today. In addition the Food Bar is ready and Grab & Go is Stocked

Wow! Ben and his team has been going non-stop all week. Braising, Roasting, Mixing, Steaming, Baking, etc. We have a couple of equipment problems so we are waiting on electrical and plumbing help.. Instead of 4 ovens we are working with one! Our opening has been pushed to Tuesday 9/29 at Noon. Michelle and her team are stocking the grocery shelves and we feel really good about what we are about to do. Final inspection and prep is being done today and tomorrow.

Good things are worth waiting for! We really didn't understand the amount of work involved to get to day 1. We have employees, but several key ones are working out their notice. We got a later start to the week due to some last minute design changes. The building needed a thorough cleaning and sanitizing after being shuttered for 8 months. But the train is on the track and the locomotive is chugging. We are delaying the opening until later in the week or as late as 9/28. We want every detail to be attended to. Here ia another peek at what will be available week 1.

I know, I'm sorry! I've been silent about True North for months. We are still committed to bringing you the best prepared foods marketplace around. I've been busy on two other projects (side job, restaurant consultant). This week we have acquired a treasure of new equipment to outfit the market. You will see a construction Dumpster next week (BTW, thanks to all my neighbors who dropped off their mattress, assorted furniture, and for taking my 2" PVC pipe, I'm taking to you Ford Ranger pickup!). You should know I have cameras. A container will be dropped on Monday to store said equipment. A bit behind schedule but once more into the breach. Keep an eye out for our listing for the yard sale 5/17. I have lots to plates, glassware to sell, donate, etc.
