As Fair Liberty's Call examines, opinions in America were often bitterly divided. Although the protagonists of our story were new York Patriots, there were many Loyalists (Tories) in the colony who deeply opposed the war with Great Britain. This article describes a little known event in America's fight for freedom.

One of the general’s own guards joins the king’s Loyalists in a wide conspiracy.

Casting Caleb for Fair Liberty’s Call www.fairlibertyscall.com
Late 20’s early 30’s, African American male, strong singer, comfortable with spirituals and blues, able to read music
Fair Liberty’s Call is an original musical based in history with authentic 18th century music. Two staged readings at the Port Washington Library July 9th and 13th. Rehearsals on Saturday afternoons in May (Rockville Centre) and June, July 7, 8 (Port Washington)
Caleb is a key heroic figure. His dilemma is based on the true possibility of being a black man who fights for independence out of conviction only to find himself facing the possibility of re-enslavement in the chaos that occurred following the war - having no alternatives but to flee the United States with the retreating British and the blacks who were loyal to England.

As we prepare to do Fair Liberty's Call this July, some interesting research. The show takes place during a farewell party in the Edwards' tavern in NY in 1775. Colonials enjoyed their libations and believed that alcohol could cure, strengthen, and make the world a better place. Some interesting drinks were named Rattle-Skull, Stonewall, Bogus, Blackstrap, Bombo, Mimbo, Whistle Belly, Syllabub, Sling, Toddy, and Flip. And if you imbibed too much you might be afflicted, biggy, boozy, busky, buzzey, cherubimical, cracked, and "halfway to Concord."
