Sarah King is a trained actor, chanteuse, street performer and dancer. She has appeared at speakeasies dubious and prestigious in New York and other cities. Her jazz quartet held a weekly residency at the Top of the Standard Hotel for ten years.

She was cast as a singer in Sleep No More, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the film, A Complete Unknown. Usually she’s singing jazz around town at an array of hotels and clubs with crews of swinging musicians. Sarah recorded two studio albums with her quartet, and was featured on Stephane Wrembel’s last two albums, Django New Orleans.

Johnny O’Neal pays tribute to his October 10th birthday mates Thelonious Monk, Junior Mance and Harry “Sweets” Edison

If you haven’t caught Johnny O’Neal lately, you really should. The Detroit-born pianist and vocalist, whose fabled history includes a stint as a Jazz Messenger in the ’80s and an appearance as Art Tatum in the 2004 movie Ray, and whose personal health battles appear to be mostly behind him, is hale and confident. Onstage, his attitude is sunny, funny and positive. The 61-year-old fits better these days into the brocaded jackets and hats he often wears, and his well-known command of postbop piano and sense of dynamics are stronger than ever—all energetic leaps and fluid rhythmic shifts, as he laughs and grunts and gasps in mock surprise. Then he’ll close his eyes, downshift the tempo and out comes that blues-soaked voice. With his buoyant personality and an unpredictable set list filled with obscure blues, ballads and more recent popular songs he chooses to ballad-ize—Nat Cole to Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan to Eubie Blake—it’s a joy to hear. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Valtinho began his musical journey as a child, inspired by the rhythms of the streets where he grew up. Drawn early to percussion, he immersed himself in the rich traditions of Brazilian music, mastering instruments such as congas, pandeiro, berimbau, agogô, abê, caixa, and many others. His voice soon became a central element of his musical expression, bridging rhythm and melody.

As his career developed, Valtinho performed and learned alongside some of Brazil’s most influential artists, including Elis Regina, Wilson Simonal, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, and Egberto Gismonti. His path later led him to Tokyo, where he collaborated with leading Japanese musicians such as Terumasa Hino, Kazumi Watanabe, and Toki Hidefumi, and toured in 1994 with Ryuichi Sakamoto on the acclaimed Sweet Revenge tour. A live performance at the Nippon Budokan marked a defining moment in his career, as did a memorable encounter and collaboration with Jaco Pastorius. Team Valtinho

Before embarking on a career in jazz, Leslie Pintchik earned a Master of Philosophy degree in seventeenth-century English literature from Columbia University. She first surfaced on the Manhattan scene in a trio with legendary bassist Red Mitchell at Bradley’s, and in the ensuing years Pintchik formed her own trio which performs regularly at New York City and East Coast jazz venues. Her trio was one of four finalists in the 1995 Cognac Hennessy Jazz Search, held at the Bottom Line in New York City.

Summer Camargo is a 24-year-old jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader who was recently named “25 for the Future” rising jazz stars by DownBeat magazine. Summer is a native of Hollywood, Florida and a Jerome Greene Fellowship recipient at The Juilliard School, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Summer is a regular performer at notable NYC jazz clubs like Dizzy’s and Birdland, as well as a member of the Mingus Big Band. In 2022 Summer became the newest and youngest member of the Saturday Night Live house band and is also enjoying her most recent role as a band member in Broadway’s new musical, Just in Time.
