The Morton Feldman piece being performed tomorrow (Saturday) at Angel Blanco's 5:30 PM Spectrum guitar recital, "The possibility of a new work for electric guitar," was diligently rescued from obscurity by Berlin guitarist Seth Josel.

The one copy of the original piece (deep pre-digital era) was lost in a car theft. Dr. Josel's explains that he reconstructed the piece from "source materials that were kindly provided to me by the Sacher Stiftung and Other Minds." This version is available form Edition Peters (see link below).

Spectrum opens its 2024-25 season tomorrow (Saturday) at 5:30 with a notable succession of bangs (e.g., Paganini) and whimpers (e.g., Morton Feldman), all courtesy of eclectically-ambitious (and ambitiously-eclectic) guitarist Angel Blanco.

I know, Angel Blanco (in red jacket), caught here in Moscow on his recent tour, looks a bit too wild to play Morton Feldman, come and see for yourself. Also on the program are electric guitar transcriptions of Paganini and Angel's compositions "Tribute" and "Omaggio a Ligeti."

Full program:

Elegy….Hebert Vazquez
Andante…Domingo Prat
Étude for left-hand…Julio Sagregas
Capricci…Niccolo Paganini
Eternal Spiral + Cuban Landscape with Bells…Leo Brouwer
Little Prelude…Augusto Novaro
Prelude Impromptu + Cadenza…Julián Carrillo
The possibility of a new work for electric guitar…Morton Feldman
Cadenza for electric guitar…Blas Galindo
Tribute…Ángel Blanco
Omaggio a Ligeti…Ángel Blanco

Overlapping with Angel Blanco's characteristically-low-key Spectrum recital (Paganini transcriptions for electric guitar, etc.) at 5:30 PM: Opening event 1-6 PM this Saturday (21 September) at BWAC Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition: An excellent (and robustly-subscribed) exhibit concept.

Embracing a delightfully-Parisian tradition, every artist rejected for this year's annual Brooklyn Museum exhibit (and applies to this Salon) will be allowed to hang one work - evidently NO questions asked (other than: "Were you relegated to the 'No' category?")

Nostalgia! The lead graphic for a McKinsey Global Institute article on clean-energy transition feature objects that look very much like the hex Simmons digital-percussion triggers from the 80s (e.g., Bill Bruford / King Crimson).

A queue-up of "Frame by Frame" could be just the thing.

Spectrum is thrilled to present the first inaugural Van Brunt Solstice Festival, at Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition in Red Hook. Curated by stalwarts of the experimental music scene Gabriel Zucker and Aaron Edgcomb, the Festival presents nine sets across two stages, featuring a wide-ranging sampling of some of the most exciting improvising musicians in New York City, including several site-specific performances, and multi-media interactions with local artists.
