Sharing his birthday with fellow jazz legends such as Andy Simpkins, Ray Barretto, and Ward Pinkett, The Duke is in great company. A pianist, band leader, and composer, there was little musically that Ellington couldn’t accomplish.

To say Duke Ellington had a prestigious career would be an understatement. His accolades include, but are not limited to: A Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a PhD from the Berklee College of Music, membership in the Jazz Hall of Fame, 14 Grammy Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also holds both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Legion of Honour, the highest civilian honors for both the United States and France, respectively. In addition to all of these accolades, he was also a driving force during the Harlem Renaissance and the resident band leader for the Cotton Club from 1927 to 1931.

It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing), Blood Count, Mood Indigo, and Take the A Train are just some of the pieces Ellington helped make famous, with the latter being considered the band’s signature tune. Blood Count was composed by fellow pianist, composer, and arranger Billy Strayhorn, with whom Ellington considered to be his writing and arranging companion, and had a 30-plus-year collaboration.

On this day, his 127th birthday, it is important to remember the Duke’s influence on music, specifically jazz, and his impact on American culture as a whole. His 1935 musical short, titled ‘Symphony in Black: A Rhapsody of Negro Life’, is lauded as a landmark in musical, cultural, and entertainment history, as well as being one of the first films written by an African American describing African American life to reach wide distribution. It is also the film debut of another jazz legend, Billie Holiday.

We at Arthur’s Tavern would like to wish Duke Ellington a very special Happy Birthday!
