Northern rye (aka Canadian style) is one of the least celebrated Rye’s on the market. We all love that 95/5 Indiana don’t we? And we all love the variety of Kentucky, Empire, and Monongahela styles. I’m left scratching my head wondering why folks haven’t fully embraced this minty and delightful style? It’s the closest thing you’ll get to rye bread in liquid form. From Alberta, to Mammoth, to Barrell, and so many others… the price and availability make this an attractive bottle to enjoy. Yo, you got any Canadian? This aged blended and bottled by single is from clocks at 139 proof and is “only” 17 years and 9 months old.

Note- I bought this bottle with my own scratch from

I cannot say that I am a light whiskey fan. The missing rye hurts my soul. However, some lights are better than others especially when they’re 16 years old and 138.2 proof. Sunday I’ll be sharing this media sample with the boys. Monday I’ll be sharing it with the and let’s see what it’s all about.

A few nights ago and I sat down and had a couple glasses of the latest batch from We deliberately focused on it and recorded a conversation about it. It’ll be linked shortly, but let’s get to the point already. Batch 35 is complex, and layered. There’s an awful lot going on in the glass and we found that one drop of water was the perfect combination. It really brought out the butterscotch on the nose and tamed the grapefruit pith on the back end. This was great! Thank you for the media bottle, and as you very well know it’ll get shared around quickly, coming to see you soon.

Let’s begin by saying simply that $189 and change for a ten year MGP rye is a very big ask considering both Redemption and Templeton offer 10 year MGP for $99. Hearing this might cause you to nod your head in agreement and doomscroll on to the next post. Here’s why I think you should at the very least consider this Nashtucky rye from - Both of the aforementioned bottlings are what I consider to be the typical MGP rye releases. Punchy. Spicy. Dill heavy. Aggressive. Assertive. Bold. They’re the street fighter, or MMA legend of your choice style of rye. Unrefined, powerful and punishing. The ten year rye, is more refined, balanced, strong but delicate, nuanced. This is the Floyd Mayweather of MGP rye. It’s got a wide range of skills, layered, not too strong but strong enough to make you remember it. This is MGP elevated, more luxurious and practically perfect. My only real criticism is that the label doesn’t scream “spend $200” on me, it doesn’t stand out at all. Huge thanks to for spending his own scratch on it and graciously sharing it with us.

Tales is over, and three days out, I’m missing my friends old and new. I cannot wait until next year. If Bourbon Fest is my SuperBowl, Tales is my Stanley Cup finals. Damn Bryan, two years in the books, can’t wait for year 3.

It’s not everyday that you get to experience something you’ve not had in 20 years. I grew up on a lot of old Willett’s. Today those things command large trucks full of cash to purchase. Yesterday kicking off Tales of the Cocktail was a bottle share that was beyond insane. 8 different waxed Willett’s, a 13yr Pennsylvania made BIB Overholt, gold vein stitzel-weller Weller, some crazy four roses.. I could have tried them all, but chose to just bask in the glory of a couple, reminiscing about 20 something years of whiskey exploration, all while doing it with a good pal that understood the gravity of the situation and allowed the experience to unfold. I wish all my friends could’ve been there to see me almost cry with joy, and to have a glass of that spectacular 23 year old Willett rye single barrel. This is why we Tales. A special mention to for being such an amazing person that I admire so much.

Yes, I brought my own bourbon glass thanks for noticing.

Not all k**b creek single barrel selections are alike. THATS. THE. POINT. This one was rough and tumble, definitely off profile. I took a lot of time getting through it because it was difficult to decipher. It says k**b on the label, but it reminded me of something else due to its aggressive nature. Last night while finishing the last of it, it clicked. This reminded me of the old age stated Noah’s Mill. I’m convinced that the 15 year Noahs mill held some of this type of beam bourbon. I suppose I’ll never know for sure, but I’m going with it.

Tales of the cocktail begins in ten days time. New Orleans is ready. I am ready. The bars and restaurants are ready. There is a huge list of free events going on during the week, as well as the ticketed convention itself. You’ve done whiskey festivals, Tales is an entirely different experience and worth the visit. If you’re not coming this year, follow along as we will do our best to entice you to come next year.

What is it about Willett Family Estate Bourbons that bring out the giddiness in grown adults? It might be the 128.2pf that doesn’t drink like 128.2pff! Obviously we were giddy before the you shoulda seen our faces when we tasted it. Good grief what a bottle! Thanks to for graciously sharing this with and myself. What a glorious glass of whiskey.
