A wonderful way to spend a Labor Day evening!
David Doucet has redefined the acoustic guitar’s role in Cajun music, blending folk fingerpicking and bluegrass flatpicking to create a sound that’s as innovative as it is authentic. For over two decades, he’s been the driving rhythm behind Beausoleil, the celebrated band he shares with his brother, Cajun fiddle legend Michael Doucet. But David’s talents shine far beyond accompaniment—his 1991 solo debut, Quand J’ai Parti, proved he’s a powerhouse in his own right.

David’s guitar journey began unexpectedly. After breaking his arm in a high school football practice, he picked up the guitar to pass the time, teaching himself with Bob Dylan and Paul Simon songbooks. A chance listen to Doc Watson inspired him to explore flatpicking, and his musical world expanded further in 1980 when he discovered Clarence White’s imaginative style on The Kentucky Colonels 1965-1967. These influences shaped the unique voice that David would bring to Cajun music.

In 1975, David, Michael, and banjo player Raoul Breaux brought Cajun music to Louisiana clubs, but commercial success eluded them. The group disbanded, with David heading to college while Michael continued on to form Beausoleil. By 1976, David had joined his brother’s band just in time for their debut album, The Spirit of Cajun Music. The rest, as they say, is history.

Since moving to New Orleans in 1980, David has continued to enrich Cajun music, both as a solo artist and a collaborator. He’s worked with legends like dobro player Josh Graves and contributed to albums by Chuck Guillory (Grand Texas), Octa Clark & Hector Duhon (Ensemble Encore), and Michael Doucet (Dit Beausoleil). Whether strumming at the heart of Beausoleil or stepping into the solo spotlight, David Doucet keeps the spirit of Cajun music alive, one chord at a time.

Jerry Giddens is a singer-songwriter, poet, and teacher. He was born on the banks of the Red River, in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised at a crossroads six miles from Ringgold, Louisiana, a small-town of 1500 people. His earliest memories of pop music are “the Fats Domino records my older sisters smuggled out of New Orleans where us kids spent many Mardi Gras and summer vacations at my Aunt Nina Ruth’s home.” But his earliest memories of music are those housed at Springhill Baptist Church, a little country church down the road from his home. There, Jerry first sang from the stage, at age six. As a teenager he would direct the church’s youth choir for Sunday services and appearances around North Louisiana. On Saturdays he and a local guitar player would sing Everly Brothers tunes for the new coffee houses springing up in the 60s.

Lynn Drury has been performing, in one arena or another, her entire life. At the ripe old age of five she won a 4-H state competition in Mississippi in pole bending. If you don't know what pole bending is, it's a little like barrel racing, Lynn says. That's horse talk. In a word, rodeos. Once you know that much about Lynn, you understand her approach.

She picked up the guitar at 26, went at it like a pro, and she's never stopped working. Her inspiration is her environment and since the late nineties, that environment has been New Orleans. The transition for the Yazoo City – born Drury was smooth. She says jasmine smells like honeysuckle, and you believe her. Sultry, sweet songs turn funky, and it's all in the same neighborhood.

We love sweet Madeleine!! (Charlie is okay too!)

Renowned New Orleans bass player Charlie Wooton who will be bringing some of the city's best musicians to Buffa's Back Room for a fun-filled evening of unexpectedly delightful music.

For those of you who don't know, Charlie is known for his dynamic, soulful playing style and has made a name for himself in the jazz, blues, and funk genres.

Wooton was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and grew up in a musical family. He began playing bass guitar at a young age and developed his skills through years of practice and performing with various bands and musicians.

In 2000, Wooton moved to New Orleans and became involved in the local music scene, playing with a variety of musicians and groups, including jazz drummer Johnny Vidacovich. He has toured extensively, including with the Royal Southern Brotherhood, a blues rock supergroup.

Those of you who came to Buffa's before the pandemic may remember him performing with Arsene Delay most Mondays. We are excited to see what happens. Each Wooton Wednesday can be a different group of musicians riffing on a different theme. If could be latin, or blues, or even renditions of TV themes. You never know what you will get!

Did you know about our Jazz Brunch every Sunday? 🌈TMYK🌈

Dylan James is a singer songwriter, photographer, videographer and artist.

Dylan James has captured with his camera many people, including Ray Charles without his shades, captured at the 1999 jazz fest where Dylan took the mask off the lone ranger. That shot is how Dylan James got into the rock and roll hall of fame. Fliming Bob Dylan and other bands like the radiators. Dylan James ran the open mic at Checkpoint and Dragons Den in the 90s and has written many songs over the years including the hit by group creatures of habit produced by Carlo Nuncio Virgins are hard find. Dylan James has performed at the Bitter End in New York and at Music City in San Francisco. He had just come from singing his protest song "What Must We Do" when he was in Philadelphia at Independence Hall.
