Gooski's - A Grungy Dive Bar Experience Worth Having

Located in the Polish Hill area of Pittsburgh, Gooski's is a dive bar that embodies the true essence of a grungy and unpretentious drinking establishment. As soon as you step inside, you're greeted by an atmosphere that embraces its raw and rebellious nature. The entire place is adorned with stickers and graffiti, giving it a unique and edgy vibe that sets it apart from any ordinary bar.

One glance at the mirror behind the bar, and you'll be greeted with bold quotes that exude the bar's unapologetic attitude. Phrases like "we decide who has a good time," "the rules: know what you want, have your money ready, don't make us kill you," "suffering is good - start now," and "South Side called - they want their do******gs back" add to the bar's distinctive character.

The menu is proudly displayed on the back wall, handwritten on a chalkboard, reinforcing the bar's down-to-earth and no-frills approach. Gooski's is one of those rare places where smoking is still allowed, adding to its vintage appeal and authentic dive bar experience.

Venturing into the restroom area, you'll notice an interesting quirk - there are no doors on the outer part of the bathrooms. This unconventional design choice somehow adds to the overall “charm” of the place, making it even more memorable.

In the back of the bar, you'll find a billiards area, perfect for those looking to challenge friends to a game or simply enjoy some friendly competition. The dim lighting, tinted in dark red hues, adds to the mysterious and intimate ambiance, making it an ideal spot to unwind and escape the outside world for a while.

As you approach the bar, you may notice the bartender casually smoking a cigarette, adding to the laid-back and unpretentious atmosphere. Nearby, an old-school cigarette machine and a CD jukebox add a touch of nostalgia, throwing back to simpler times. Old rerun episodes of “The Simpsons” played on the TVs while we enjoyed our meals, warming our 80’s-90’s child’s hearts.

Now, let's talk about the food. We ordered a variety of wing flavors, including Cajun dry rub, honey BBQ, and regular BBQ. To say they tasted fantastic would be an understatement. Each bite was a burst of flavor, with the seasonings expertly crafted to perfection. The wings came in orders of 9 instead of the usual 12, a unique twist that adds to the bar's unconventional approach but certainly worth noting. The only small disappointment was that the wings were solely drums and flats, rather than our usual desired full wings. Despite this minor setback, the quality and taste of the wings made up for it.

It's worth mentioning that the wing prices at Gooski's lean towards the higher end, but considering the exceptional atmosphere and mouthwatering flavors, it's a trade-off that many patrons find worthwhile. The experience of immersing oneself in the ambiance of this authentic dive bar and savoring the delectable wings is truly one-of-a-kind.

In conclusion, Gooski's is not your average bar. Its grungy dive bar experience, covered in stickers and graffiti, sets it apart from the crowd. With its intriguing quotes, unconventional design choices, and “no eff’s given” charm, it captures the essence of a genuine dive bar. The fantastic flavors of their wings and the unique atmosphere make Gooski's a place well worth visiting for anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable dive bar experience in the Pittsburgh area.

Dive bars have always held a special place in our hearts, as that’s where our relationship started many years ago. There's something about the dim lighting, the nostalgic decor, and the friendly regulars that make them feel like home. But what happens when you take that classic grungy dive bar experience and give it a facelift? Well, you get a renovated dive bar that's better than ever before.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a renovated dive bar that blew me away- “The Inn” in Kittanning, located in Armstrong County, PA. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was in for a treat, literally and figuratively. The wood paneling on the walls gave the space the perfect redneck paradise vibe, while the abundance of neon bar signs added a touch only found in the most authentic of dive bars and provide the perfect backlighting for those late night drunken selfies, of which we unfortunately would not be taking part in tonight. Let’s be real- tonight we were on a mission… we were here for one reason and one reason only; to put back some wings.

As we made our way to a seat the bar, I couldn't help but notice the unfinished OSB boards on the ceiling. This unique touch certainly set a vibe, and I was digging it. It was clear that the owners had put a lot of thought and care into the exterior updates of the bar, but ensured they could keep the original feel- and it paid off. This place would be a Snuff-chewing, Coors Light-drinking man’s paradise. The renovations boast a nice sized outdoor covered deck that is perfect for those smokers trying to keep out of the weather, or those just wanting a little breeze with their meal.

But enough about the decor - let's talk about the food. The bar had a reputation for serving up some of the best chicken wings in town, and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. The wings were cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside - and the sauces and seasonings were the perfect blend of tangy and spicy. And the best part? They were offered at a great price, making them the perfect snack to pair with a cold beer. And these weren’t any wimpy punk wing dings. The Inn serves the real deal- fresh juicy full wings, dripping fresh from the fryer and came out exactly 21 minutes from the time we placed our order. Made by the cook Bryan and served with a side of homemade ranch made fresh daily by the bartender/server. My husband, a Kittanning native, vouches for the fish dinners as well, if you are in the mood for something different, or going for a Dive Bar Date Night during Lent. Be kind to the bartender… she’s new. If you want a mixed drink, be prepared to describe it.

As I sat at the bar while waiting on my wings, I couldn't help but notice the slot machines in the corner. They added a touch of stereotypical local redneck excitement to the night. The only thing missing was a pool table. Brad entertained himself with the wooden brain-teaser puzzles strewn across the bar top.

Aside from 5-6 regulars who were frequenting their usual seats that are nearly perfectly shaped to their backsides, we had the place nearly to ourselves. On the flip side, The Inn can be so packed at times that there’s standing room only. Definitely lucked out today being a holiday weekend. When we got the bill, we were thrilled to know our wings were on special and we scored a dozen full wings (6 mild and 6 seasoned) for just around $18 after taxes but before. Your mileage may vary, based on current market price of wings when you order.

Overall, our experience at this renovated dive bar was nothing short of excellent, and The Inn exceeded our expectations. From the great food to the unique decor, and friendly service, it had everything you could want in a dive bar, and then some for those who aren’t ready to commit to the kind of dive bar that your shoes stick to the floor, and the patrons light their next cig before the first is out, all while reminiscing about “that high school football game” they scored a touchdown in 35 years ago. If you're ever in the Kittanning area, I recommend stopping by - you won't be disappointed.
