âThe Christmas Songâ by .estelle and

Almost like something right of a lounge on Christmas Eve, P. Wasyâs rendition captures the movement of the strings, the depth of the bass, and the calming atmosphere of the keys all in a worthy, well-rehearsed, and intricate composition. P. Wasy often finds herself collaborating with other electronic/house musicians but a quick shuffle through her Bandcamp page and you find that she also has a very unique solo pianist sound. When it comes to her composition on âThe Christmas Song,â itâs very easy to tell that P. Wasy is very much in her element here.
Speaking of âin their elementâ, letâs talk about Clare Estelleâs vocal performance on this track. Itâs not very often that I get the chance to hear Clare open up vocally the way she does on âThe Christmas Songâ. Usually, she feels more like she is working towards a pop vibe, which makes it really nice to hear her stretch her legs - vocally of course. Revisiting the âoriginal versus this versionâ conversation, Clare uses the piano arrangement as more of a guideline for harmonics and melodic changes, which is a refreshing twist on a song that has been done a million times over and over. The two artists have almost taken the original version and used it as a framework chord structure-wise, and moved on from there. Even the piano solo is nowhere near the precedent most covers follow, and Clare Estelle does a great job accompanying what Iâll call the âpiano breakdownâ with comforting harmonic ooooâs.
Overall, Clare Estelle and P. Wasy did a great job adding their modern twist on a timeless Christmas classic. Christmas music gets a âre-imaginingâ every year, so when good renditions come through my speakers unexpectedly I am always happy to pay credit where credit is due.
