Today's wine - from the cooler. 2010 Sanford Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills Appellation. Still drinking beautifully after all these years. Surprising fruit, together with the secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors you would expect. Tasting it calls to mind that sunny afternoon that we spent on the patio outside the tasting room, looking out on the vineyards, enjoying the wines.

The blind tasting challenge: Correctly match five Pinot Noirs to their respective regions- Willamette, Russian River Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Chile. Eleven participants, including five with wine certifications, tried. None got all five. None got four. Only one got three. It's not that easy.

Today's wines, tasted among a group of friends: Jean-Michel Gautier Vouvray Sec 2018. Lovely aperitif. Floral, white peach, mineralty. Slight sweetness on the finish even though it is a dry wine. Stoller Rose of Pinot Noir 2020. Bright strawberry and raspberry aromas and flavors. Brisk acidity. Refreshing. Quivira Pillsbury Vineyard Dry Creek Valley Syrah 2018. Lush blackberry and black cherry fruit. Smooth tannins and body. Long finish with undertones of coffee giving way to blackberry finish. Finally, Fess Parker Santa Barbara County Syrah 2018. Smooth drinking Syrah with black fruit and lush body.

Today's wine is a Rose. A Rose in February? Why not? Rose all year. This one is different. It's Gotas del Mar, from Castilla y Leon in Spain. 70% Tempranillo, 30% Prieto Picudo. Bright red raspberry, rhubarb, black cherry, and black pepper. Bright acidity.
