Best review this week comes from Carlos Nieto;

“I finally was able to make it while the season was open. I walked in on a weekend, and Kim greeted me with a smile, made some recommendations, and I enjoyed them all. A few days later, I walk in and Dirt greeted me like I've been there before, put a smile on my face. He then poured me an excellent cold beer, a few actually. I ended up taking 4 cases back to Miami. Really great beer, and amazing service!
Based on reviews, it seems like the owners appreciate poets.
I hope you enjoy this original haiku:

Some things are meant cold,
The beer did not disappoint,
Here, Take my money.”

I had to reply;
“There once was a man named Carlos Nieto,
Who thought our beer was very neat oh.
He said with a grin
While wiping his chin
“Drink only the best” is my credo

Thanks you rock!”

Last year we did The Blonde of Frankenstein for Halloween. Working on this years. I am leaning torwards The Blonde From the Black Lagoon. ( Gilligan's Island and The Creature from the Black Lagoon are the only times I have ever heard of a lagoon. As a child I thought they would be very important when I grew up. Same goes for quick-sand)
It takes weeks to get labels done so planning has to start soon.

It is not a new beer just a seasonal label for our Kitty Hawk Blonde.

“Scotch Ale brings forth visions of fog filled bogs, dimly lit pubs and a hearty pint of ale.”

So why the hell is it on a beer menu in a loud, sunny waterfront beach town bar. Well, because we do British Isle beers and we couldn’t leave a Scotch ale off the list.

You do not see many Scotch ales out there. Keagan, one of our Beer Monkeys, got so excited seeing one listed on the beer menu at Tugs in Avon that he immediately ordered one, only to find out it was our Kill Devil Scotch Ale.

Scotch Ale, also known as "Wee Heavy," is a rich, malt-forward Scottish beer style characterized by caramel, toffee, and molasses flavors, often with a smooth, warming finish and a higher alcohol content. Hops never thrived in the Scottish climate and importing them was expensive. Brewers used these expensive hops sparingly making their beers malty and sweet. The Scotch were never big on having a head on their beers. They felt cheated. That’s why Scottish ales tend to be less carbonated.

A very loud (they are always loud) rude gentleman once lost his mind over the fact that his beer had a head on it. This was back when we served our beers in dimpled twenty-ounce English mugs. He did not want to hear anything about a proper pour he demanded “my god damn sixteen ounces”. I had to oblige. I took his glass, drank what I thought was four ounces and handed it back. Unbelievably, he was still not satisfied. There is just no pleasing some people.

Pubs and taverns with walls covered in police, fire, and military patches are a tradition that honors first responders. Our pub's wall displays hundreds of patches sent or brought in by officers and travelers. This practice has historical heritage roots as well as displays of memorials, and community support.

Irish-American Connection: Many historic Irish pubs began collecting patches because of the deep ties between the Irish diaspora and emergency services. Emigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries often found careers in law enforcement and firefighting. I must look no further than my uncles Jeffery, Pete, and Mike. Leaving a department patch behind became a way to honor their heritage. Pubs throughout Ireland are filled with them.

I don’t recall who the first person was who downed a pint, shared a laugh and handed over his patch to us but he started a tradition that we are more than happy to continue.

Yesterday we received three separate envelopes from around the country, each containing a letter thanking us for a good time and a patch from their respective departments. I can’t help but think it is us who should be thanking them.

A couple of pub changes this week.
Trivia has moved to Mondays, and we now have music on Tuesdays!
The Waterfront view is always changing but the beer and kinship never do.

Beer wasn't just a beverage during the American Revolution; it was a cornerstone of colonial survival, a tool for political protest, and the literal fuel that kept the Continental Army moving. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, let’s raise a mug to the history and importance of beer in America.

Taverns as Battlegrounds: Before and during the war, colonial taverns served as the internet, the post office, and the local parliament. Radical groups like the Sons of Liberty used taverns such as Boston's Green Dragon as secret meeting places to plan protests and share intelligence. We are tipping our caps to this tavern with our own special Dragon Signs.

The Military Ration: Beer was considered a dietary staple and a safer alternative to potentially contaminated water. One of George Washington's first actions as Commander of the Continental Army was to mandate a daily quart of beer for every soldier. It is rumored that my great, great, great-uncle Jeremiah Charron argued for one-gallon rations of beer but was denied. Later, Washington even battled the Continental Congress to ensure these rations weren't cut.

We do Revolutionary War reenactments every day at the Waterfront Pub in Nags Head. Stop in, talk smack about England and get your beer rations in pints.

What do you do after spending the day brewing up a batch of Patriot Ale? You get behind the Waterfront Pub's bar and serve Patriot ale ( and others) all night.
Keagan will be behind the bar slinging beer and answering all your beer and history questions.
Live music on the deck, God willing and the Creek don't rise.
