Wines around the world
Off the top of your head, what is the most widely planted grape variety in South Africa?
*bonus point for telling us what is second on the list!
The next stop on our tour takes us across the Indian Ocean to South Africa! Most of this nation's wine regions are found close to the coastline in the Western Cape, where over 90% of the wine is made.
With most of the vineyards located between 32° and 35° south of the Equator, summer temperatures can get very hot, so coastal currents play a significant role in keeping conditions cool. Mountain ranges also offer producers a dramatic range of aspects, altitudes and soils.
The Western Cape is divided into three regions: the Coastal Region, Breede River Valley and the Cape South Coast. These regions are further split into districts, and then wards.
In terms of grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah are very popular, and Pinot Noir is grown in the coolest regions such as Walker Bay. Pinotage, a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault developed in South Africa, also has significant plantings. Chenin Blanc is produced in a range of styles, and Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are also widely grown.
Keep an eye out for our next part as we discover key grape-growing regions around the world which are explored on the Level 2 and 3 Awards in Wines.
