We all try to avoid the topic, but I just completed my 64th trip around the sun! Hard to not think about the rapidly ticking life clock and subsequent mortality. I’m so grateful to all of you who took some of your time and hard earned money to help this old man realize a small dream: make something of my own, stretch my creative wings and get to know the people of my adopted home! But, tick-tock, tick-tock… On to the next adventure! The name of this week’s special isn’t meant for gloom and doom, conversely it is to remind us of life’s urgency. Love those close to you, relish your time left and drink in the world around you! Keep in mind my sense of humor, then come in and try MJ’s Dying Bastard! Liquor(too many to name), Sweet Vermouth, Bitters and a touch of Cherry Syrup(home brewed). Perfect way to say “Until we meet again!” MJ’s final two days are Thursday and Friday 4pm-10pm. The last full week of this MJ’s ride. What will you remember? Watermelon Old Fashioned? A Sangria? For me, I’d like to be remembered for the original cocktail format: Spirit, sugar, water, bitters. This template takes attention to detail, subtle variation and quality ingredients. My last Weekly Special is the ultimate expression of this, MJ’s 100 Year Old Cigar. Aged Rum, Bitter Cynar, Sweet Benedictine, A Touch of Scotch and an Absinthe Mist. If you’ve ever wanted to be fully engaged by a cocktail, this is the one. Strong, sweet, bitter and earthy. Trouble comes in many forms. “Here comes trouble!” Worse, “I’ve got car trouble.” Friendly, “What seems to be the trouble?” Also, one of the best TV episodes of all time “The Trouble with Tribbles.” England & Ireland probably had the worst case of “The Troubles”. This ethno-nationalist dispute lasted 30 years without a clear resolution. But in the 1990s they chose peace. Let’s celebrate Peace with MJ’s Irish Bramble. Irish Whisky, Lime Juice, Raspberry Liqueur, and Ginger Ale. Look close and look far. I this search find Peace. We all want the same things for ourselves, our family and our friends. This is hard. The hardest part about making a decision is making it. MJ’s Downtown Tavern has been great for me. Being new to this town and the South in general, I’ve gotten to know so many people, connected to the grape vine. You’ve supported me in my experimentation with my craft. I hope we’ve all benefited from my passion for creating cocktails 🍸 , and appreciated our mellow, safe, inclusive atmosphere. But as I approach my 64th trip around the Sun, priorities are changing. My father and my children are too far away and seen too infrequently. While I still have my health, I want to see more of this great land of ours. Finally, while I’ve played a small role in the culture of Muskogee, I’d like more opportunity to experience it for myself. Thank you all for the support, the kind words and “getting” MJ’s odd business model! The last day of operation for MJ’s will be Friday May 8th. Please come by between now and then, say hi, share a story, or , I don’t know, have a drink! This week the Special salutes you all, MJ’s Treacle. British slang for love or sweetheart, it features Rum, Dark Simple Syrup, Bitters and an Apple Juice float. It’s been a great 3 years, I love you, one and all. Normal hours this week with the exception of Saturday, we are closed for a private event. And if you ever wanted to own a bar, a cute one is available by the Civic Center… 💙

The essence of Spring. New. Fresh. Chaos. Awakening. How to bring this feeling to a cocktail? First, rethink vodka as a base. It adds body and strength without masking other flavors. Steal the chaos from a James Bond martini and the bright & bitter from an Italian amaro. Over to Sooner Supply for fresh, new glassware. A toast to MJ’s Spring Awakening! Truly one of my favorites. Wisconsin deserves a minute. It’s the one of last places glaciers were in the US, so the landscape is beautiful with moraines and lakes. The Badger State has more shoreline than Florida. Wisconsin was home to Frank Lloyd Wright, perhaps our greatest architect, who had great influence here in Oklahoma. But most importantly to our discussion here, it was settled by mostly Germans and Scandinavians. Subsequently as a State, they can drink. They rank at the top nationally in alcohol consumption and events where alcohol is consumed. Their primary spirit of choice is Brandy! Good story there, please ask! The preferred cocktail of Wisconsin is the Brandy Old Fashioned. Quality French Brandy, Simple Syrup, Bitters, Big Fruit and top with 7Up! Refreshing and slightly sweet like Oklahoma’s own Club Special, it’s a treat!! MJ’s is back Thursday through Sunday 4pm-10pm with the exception of Saturday, we are closing at 7:00pm for the JoDee Messina concert !! A few seats left for some 90’s Country Fun!!

There are many people to thank for this odyssey we call MJ’s. To the regulars who give their time and hard earned loot, bless you. To my friends who have allowed me to put our lives on hold for a few years, you have a special place in my heart. To my kids for their unwavering support of their old man ♥️ And especially to my father. He turned 90 in January, thank you for being around to see it! Thank you for loving me unconditionally, through the good and the bad. He has taught me wonder, love for the outdoors, problem solving and appreciation for my fellow man. Without his support, I never would have been brave enough or smart enough to pull this off. For all the people that I have met and that you have met, this Guinness is for you, Pop! Love you! It is Spring Break time, so MJ’s will be open Thursday March 12th, then will be closed for a couple weeks. As you may have guessed, I’m going to see my Dad! Come Pre-pregame St Paddy’s with us! Thanks again to everyone for the support 💙
