Join us at a youth-led interactive session that celebrates the power of creativity, culture, and leadership in rural communities. Experience how Rural Youth Leaders (RYL) across the country are using art, storytelling, and cultural traditions to drive real change. Building on our plenary presentation from Tuesday morning, we’ll share hands-on activities, personal stories and powerful models for action from youth members and cultural stewards in the 2025-26 RYL fellowship representing rural communities in Alaska, Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Tennessee. We will also share information on how young people and stewards in your community can apply to be part of the next RYL national cohort.

Join us to engage with a newly-forming national web of people who use art, creative practices and/or cultural traditions in their work with youth. Convened by the Rural Youth Leaders (RYL) team and community cultural stewards of the current RYL cohort, this session will provide creative opportunities to connect and learn with everyone in the space as well as shape the national web-building work of RYL. We’ll also share more about the RYL national fellowship for youth leaders and cultural stewards and preview the next opportunity to apply for 2027-28.

Rural Youth Leaders (RYL) will share inspiring and complex stories, art and cultural expressions focused on youth-led change efforts across the country. We’ll hear about their work in a wide range of rural places including Alaska, Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Tennessee as well as their experiences over the last year in the 2025-26 RYL fellowship. Join us this morning and during our extended youth-led session on Wednesday to learn more about how to engage, empower and activate young people in creative leadership within your own rural community!

📣TUNE IN! 📣 Bobby B is one of the producers of this amazing project that amplied the voices of high school students growing up in rural Appalachia. WATCH 📺 The award-winning documentary about SHINERS will broadcast premiere - SUN FEB 8 at Noon and 8 pm on PBS/KET/KENTUCKY

Along with stunning original and traditional music, high school students write and perform a play about growing up in rural Appalachia. While overcoming problems of addiction in one of the nation's poorest counties, the inspiring students travel from their small town to Kentucky’s high school theater competition. The hearts and voices of the young people at Owsley County High School in eastern Kentucky shine as they share their story.
