The possibility of being poisoned by the bootlegger's booze was real - real enough to be a plausible incident in contemporary novels. In Young Man of Manhattan by Katharine Brush (1929) the female protagonist almost dies and is left blind for a number of weeks after drinking whiskey which was in fact methyl alcohol.

Just can't get my head out of this British vintage cocktail book - Cocktails How to Mix Them (1932). Here's a lovely little drink, The Royal Cocktail, which coincidentally uses Dubonet, one of the late Queen's (and her mother's) favorite tipples, although its name comes from being first introduced at the Royal Hotel in Dieppe in 1921.

Fill the bar glass half full of broken ice and add:
1 dash of Orange Bitters
1 dash of Angostura Bitters
2/6 gill of Gin
1/6 gill of Dubonet
Stir up well, strain into cocktail glass, add a cherry, and squeeze lemon-peel on top.

By the way, remember a British gill is 5 ounces.

Whipped back from the Avalon Ball - thank you - then whipped into hosting family members and catching up with work. So, when I came across this little number - The Whip Cocktail - I just had to give it a taste.

1/2 oz Absinthe Pernod,
1/2 oz. French Vermouth,
1/2 oz Brandy,
1/2 oz Curacao (or Triple Sec).
Shake until frozen, then strain into a glass. Here I have used a small fizz glass.

I found it in Cocktails: How to Mix Them (1932) which notes, "In Egypt they call it 'Kurbag' which is the Arabic word for whip"

What's a gill (pronounced "jill")? Well that all depends on whether you are in the UK or the US. It's a quarter of a pint which are 20 ounces in Britain and 16 ounces in the US. Before introduction of the metric system, standard measure of spirits in England and Northern Ireland was 1/6 gill, and 1/5 or 1/4 gill in Scotland. Ever had a "nip" of something? That's 1/4 gill. It all comes in handy when reading vintage cocktail recipes.

Every once in a while one makes a cocktails that just does not fit the season. This one I tried last week felt out of season. The Gaby appears in The Cocktail Book (1926) and has equal parts of dry gin, Creme d'Yvette (Creme de Violette), and Creme de Menthe. The mint shines through and so I think we will have to wait until Christmas for this one to make its return. Still, it's a lovely color.

Returning from Japan, only one cocktail will do - the Japanese. Various recipes exist, but all include brandy and orgeat (non-alcoholic sweetener made from almonds and orange flower water). Tonight's recipe is from Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails (1920): "1 tsp Orgeat Syrup, 2 dashes Angostura Bitters, 1 glass [2 oz] Brandy. Shake well, strain into a cocktail glass, with a Cherry." Thanks to Giggle H2O's good friend Kate Cullinane, the cherries are pierced on samurai sword picks. Kanpai!
