The concept of The Lounge was inspired by GSA and BSU’s decision to create the “Out the Hate” rallies, which consisted of an open mic where people were encouraged to speak out against labels and stereotypes. GSA and BSU decided to create the rally because individuals defaced their fliers with racial and homophobic slurs. This inspired SMC alum Napoleon Dargan and Remy Smith-Lewis to create an envi

The Lounge is a student led organization that is aimed at opening up dialogue both between and within communities. It is an opportunity for individuals to open up and voice their opinions on their realities while at the same time learning about other peoples. Our mission is to provide a space for Saint Mary’s students where they can express themselves through a variety of artistic methods. Students reveal their life experiences regarding self-identity and social justice issues through spoken word, singing, rapping, painting, playing instruments, etc. The Lounge is an outlet that creates compassion, empathy, and networking while breaking down cultural barriers between students from all backgrounds. Currently, The Lounge is on its 12th generation of committee members
