Todays Lesson: HAPPY PLACE
& Time on Target 🎯
It’s been a few months of vigorous training for me. One tool I use is one we have on the website called The Mantis. This tracks your shots and plots them. The Orange zone is when I’m in the spot and on trigger or off safety and actively pulling and patiently waiting for the surprise shot to break. This video is from a 50 yd shot on my bag target with a silverback plus. I’m getting better each week and by better I’m meaning the reduction of movement in the spot while actively pulling that extra 3.5-4lbs of pressure to get the shot to break. I tell people the middle is my “happy place”. I do a lot to get there and don’t want to ruin it by forcing the shot fast once I’m there or worse yet making the shot go off before I’m there. You have to trust the float, hang out in your happy place! Right now I’m shooting better than in the past several years. Training gets addictive when you see results. The difference is in the details! Make training addictive and you break down barriers! (I’ve pasted a link to the device I’m talking about incase you want to check it out) They aren’t a sponsor but I like them and wanted them attainable.

When working with novice archers it’s important to comment on what they are doing right as you make corrections. In this example the archer was not anchoring in a consistent location. When she did her stability score shows the result.

Improving with data! Evaluate your shot process. This is a barebow example. When making changes in the shooting process, it is often hard to see measurable change. In this case the archer was working on approaching the target vertically. You can see that they were more stable as they approached from above vs below. Next step is checking the bow setup to eliminate the tendency to torque the riser left after the shot. If the bow setup is balanced, you could adjust the tiller of the limbs to create offset to help the archer induce a more fluid shot.

Data-driven improvement in compound bow shooting:
This is what “dead in your hand" looks like. To increase the stability score work on trying to hold for the same amount of time each shot. Don’t hold too long.
When this archer completes setup you can see that they make a “loop” before settling down. Possible causes: the archer could be squeezing the grip or the archer has a weak wrist/loose grip as they hit the back wall (multiple images).

Data-driven compound bow tuning: The riser's wobble right/left is consistent as the archer achieves alignment and anchor. Try adding weight to the front stabilizer, or adjusting the position of your back bar.

Data-driven improvement! This trace's stability was affected by collapsing. Make sure your stance is consistent. Push with the bow arm until you can lock your draw arm in. During your hold concentrate on keeping linear alignment in your arms. Imagine your arms are parallel with the arrow.

Data-driven improvement: Don’t forget to hold your follow through until the arrow hits. The movement of the riser after the release (seen in the gap between the white and red Xs) can be corrected by making sure your bow arm is strong, shoulder is relaxed, grip in the heel of your hand, and knuckles at 45 degrees.

Data-driven improvement: Approaching the target from the bottom takes more effort to anchor, settle, and expand. Work on approaching the target from the same direction consistently. Setting up your shot slightly above the center helps smooth out the draw cycle.
